    Jesus fucking Christ.

That's pretty much all I got.

How big is the extension? I didn't make it past page one before I had to go cave my head against the nearest wall.

Oh boy! Coach of the month! Way to win when it doesn't matter.

    Dame won those for him.

I have my issues with Stotts at times too, but I really, really don't like this. Well, when they win it's all because of Dame and when they lose it's all because of Stotts. Literally, that seems to be the theme here and it's just not true...

Not really. People arent going to ceiticize Stotts in a win, even though people like myself still see major issues in his system and schemes during such wins.

It's not win/loss based at all.

Not trying to start anything, but what would've happened if Harkless didn't cramp up in the 4th OT of game 3 against Denver and we not only lose that game but we still lose the next two like we did and Denver wins the series in 5. Would you think less of Stotts? That might seem like a crazy hypothetical but it literally took an injury for us to get a fresh body in there.

The hypothetical game is like, I dunno we could go down that for, forever. What if Nurk’s leg doesnt snap? What if Kanter’s shoulder doesnt tear, what if CJ / Steph in game 2 of the WCF’s make shots that are open and perfectly capable of making.
    What if...?
The answer to Harkless is no. Stotts strengths and weaknesses as a coach didnt change because of Harkless cramping up. In terms of the playoff run, I actually thought he improved this year over passed years, at least this year between games he made adjustments. Adjustments have always been hard for him to make at all, this year from one game to the next he did make them. His rotations, and in game adjustments definitely questionable, and his defensive scheme has always been a question mark.

Sure you criticize Stotts all the time, but the poster I replied to and the general consensus is almost always, when they win its all because of Dame (CJ sometimes) and when the lose its all on Stotts. Its just not true, Stotts has problems sure.

Heres something we have to sit back and understand though. Every single NBA team is filled with coaches who live and breath basketball, with some of the best athletes in the world, heck even the New York Knicks had amazingly gifted individuals. If his Schemes were so terrible, and his systems all so flawed they wouldn't win nearly as much as they do.

I absolutely believe that the narrative that they win, “in-spite” of Stotts is silly at times. When his bad “system” ends up with guys bricking open shots no one seems to say oh that was an excellent play call they just missed it. When they make it, its oh look how great that player is.

Stotts isn't a Great coach and Id contend he might not be the guy who can push them to a championship, but he isn't a terrible coach either.

If the won game 4, they wouldve won in spite. Turner the last 20 minutes of the game at PF...

Any coach can run pick n roll offense with a drop defensive scheme. Dudes not even good. He's as basic as it gets, and in the NBA if youre basic, you're bad IMO.

I posted this a while ago, but I thought I'd revise it based on the extension + our WCF flameout:

I feel you should judge NBA coaches based on:

    1. Team performance relative to talent: How did we do vs how did everybody think we'd do.
Nobody thought we'd make the WCF. There was only one playoff series in his entire tenure where we were favored to win and we didn't, and even in that season many were expecting us to not even make the playoffs.
    GRADE: A

    2. Player performance before/after they leave our team: Does a player improve when put on a different roster and unencumbered by our coach?
How do Plumlee, Crabbe, Aldridge, Matthews, Batum, etc look? The only guy I can think of who got significantly better was Pat Connaughton. Is that because Stotts held him back, or Giannis just creates a shitton of wide open threes? Portland has an outstanding track record on reclamation projects as well (Kanter, Hood and Curry most recently). If I'm an NBA agent and my player's stock is currently low, the Blazers are the top destination on my list. Nobody turns lemons into lemonade like Terry Stotts.
    GRADE: A+

    3. Coach's ability to reach players: Do players bitch a lot or fight with the coach? Is the locker characterized by chemistry and people accepting roles?
Widely regarded as one of the best lockers in the league. Portland is loaded with guys who were overlooked/underappreciated. We don't have a single player who is doing worse than expected from when they first joined the team. Nurkic was viewed as a locker room cancer in Denver. Now a lot of that may be Dame and CJ, but good coaches get their stars to be on their page and it's clearly happening here.
    GRADE: B+

    4. Team ability to play a "modern" game: The NBA constantly evolves. Does our team reflect current best practices?
We run a guard-oriented pace-and-space team that's pretty much what everybody is trying to do, so our offense is fine. Our defense is predictable, low gambling and relies to much on dropping bigs too much.
    GRADE: B-

    5. Team organization in-game: Do we take advantage of 2-for-1s? Do we run out of fouls frequently? Do players play too much/not enough? Do we make adjustments?
Some of this is pretty subjective. I hate how much we play Turner, for example, but on the other hand maybe the coach sees things on the court or in the locker room that I don't. But overall on the objective stuff (timeouts, out-of-bound play effectiveness, 2-for-1's) Portland is actually really, really good. We definitely should have been better prepared for Warriors small-ball though, and it's clear he's slow to change things up when it's going badly.
    GRADE: B

    6. If we fired the coach today, who replaces him? This is a grade for how irreplaceable this coach is vs what's out there.
When you look at his body of work and my criteria, it's really hard to argue we'd be better with most other coaches that are available. Portland just isn't a destination franchise. We don't have the talent, the glamor or the history. We spent a decade in coaching hell with Cheeks & McMillan. Run them through my criteria and it's pretty obvious how good we have it now.
    GRAD: A

Stotts isn't a top 5 coach. If we could get one of them, hey, I'm all for it. (If we can give up CJ and get back Giannis, well, sign me up for that too.) But realistically the Blazers aren't going to be a magnet for that kind of coaching talent. We've got about as good as we're likely to get. I'd rather the team focus on roster improvement and developing youngsters, and leave a system that mostly works in place.

    Dude really?

Yeah he used me as an excuse but i don't seriously buy it. He was noted as being pissed in another thread about something else, but my antics that morning was icing on the cake.

Yeah. Ill take the blame as a sport, but if you think i truly believe i was the reason, you are still fooled by me.

The real reason he left is because he was too uptight and couldn't dismiss the things he read he didn't like.
Like all of us, he had an ignore button he could have used, but he chose to have a tantrum and leave all together.

Thats the truth of the matter, but here you are, drudging up old shit to create drama and then will deny it like your typical self.

Man i thought you were starting to come around.....

Anyhow, boobs leaving had nothing to do with me and everything to do with his inability to move past the things he read he didn't like.

Even I'm learning to move past those things....

    Failed here though...
Nice job at dredging up old shit like the enquirer....

I feel like you should judge coaches by the style of basketball and schemes seen on the court.

    1. Talent is subjective to bias and opinion. Expectations are biased, especially in national media. People always doubt Portland, no matter what. Using that to say the coach is good is a reach and a half.

    2. Plumlee isnt any worse in DEN. Matthews isnt a fair comparison because he left right after an achilles tear. Aldridge had his best seaaon in San Antonio. Only reason his stats went diwn at first was because his role changed. Curry, Hood, and Kanter all showed what they did in Portland earlier in their careers.

    3. A coaches ability to reach players, get them to not fight, accept roles, and have good chemistry? Thats as much on the GM in regards to the character of players he brings in, and kn Dame for being a leader able to develop chemistry. Our chemistry and locker room wouldve been the same, regardless of the coach. A coach doesnt really affect the dynamic between players, or how willing a player is to accept a role.

    4. We dont run a pace-and-space scheme. Were one of the slowest paced teams in the leauge. Our offense is basically simple handoffs, pick n roll, and isolation. Youre right abiut how poor our defensive scheme is to be used as the o ly scheme over an entire season.

    5. 2-for-1s are extremely basic, and shouldnt be used to credit an NBA coach. Rec league teams go for 2-for-1s. We ran ET at backup PF for the last 20 minutes of a game we lost in OT because we got outrebounded by 20. He doesnt make in-game adjustments. How this can be rated a B is beyond me.

    6. Coaches arent looking for a destination franchise. Mike Budenholzer (the guy I advocated firing Stotts for last summer) went to Milwaukee...

Because we had poor former coaches doesnt make Stotts good. Theres no correlation.

This list comes across as extremely biased.
