Simons is for sure a gifted scorer and shooter. But he's not all that much else at the moment. The only way he gets meaningful minutes at the backup PG in the regular season is if Olshey literally forces Stott's hand by not signing ANY OTHER GUARD.

Trent is a one-dimensional gunner. The Rockets could probably use him!

I don’t think there’s any question that Ant will be the first guard off the bench. He can handle it.

Use Win Shares/48 minutes. It's way more accurate than Win Shares.

So from this I take it you agree to a point?
Personally I would like to see him mature a bit more and I would like the Blazers to look into a better option that can contribute right now.
I just think this is the time to make a move if there is one that becomes available.

Depends on what you believe the hype to be.

If you think he's going to be one of the next great PGs in the league, you will be disappointed.

He's MERELY going to be one of the next great SGs in the league.

But rumor was, she couldn't handle such a small bat. :devilwink::inquisition:
First, Trent has hardly played in the NBA so it's way to premature to determine what he is and isn't as an NBA player. Teams also can use one "dimensional gunners" as guys by the name of Jamal Crawford and Vinnie Johnson as well as many others come to mind.

As for a back up PG, do you not think Stotts and Olshey discuss things as to needs and plans for the season? the season is a long ways off before the final roster needs to be determined. Stotts isn't forced to use Simons as backup PG as we also have McCollum and Lillard that can be on the floor along with Simonsd to make his growth easier. We also don't know how Hezonjia is going to work out either.

Gonna be even worse when CJ has a bad game and Simons is on the pine.

So in other words, nothing will change in this forum. That speaks more about the quality of posters than anything else.

The NBA has become much more swayed to a scorer’s league, more than it has ever been. The league has gone away from traditional positions. The more versatile you are, the better and more valuable you are. Many teams have 2-3 guys that can handle the ball and distribute the ball on the floor at any given time, if not more. That may not be the strength of those players on the floor, but they have the ability, and it has lessened the need for the traditional PG.

Ant can clearly score. I assume the team is going to focus on growing him as a facilitator. If he grows there, he will be a much more complete player and it will be hard to keep him off the floor.

We’re seeing similar things in MLB, where versatility is becoming a huge thing teams are looking for (who doesn’t love Martin Gonzalez). There is a growing trend for teams looking for shortstops that can hit because if you have someone who can hit and play shortstop, you theoretically have a player who can hit and play any position on the field (outside of pitcher and catcher).

For real. Its okay have high expectations on him but also realize that he'll have growing pains, and that comes with the progression.
