“What if we sell illegal drugs to all the folks who can’t afford their prescriptions anymore, then arrest them and send them to a privately owned prison that we finance?”

Sounds like a slam dunk for JP Morgan & Chase.

What if we just allow drugs to easily come into our country and kill our kids, folks and siblings?
How about the movie industry that is progressive but don't give a crap what they put out that poisons our young people.
And congress doesn't give a damn think done because of politics.

I don't know that we've made it easy for drugs to come in. We have a lot of borders, drugs are small, there are a lot of profits in drugs, so the smugglers are motivated. It is true that we've deprioritized drugs so that we can spend more time torturing children at the border, but overall I'd give our drug interdiction efforts a pretty good score. The solution doesn't lie in sealing the borders, that can't be done.

Huh? I thought it was video games that corrupted our youth. That and masturbation. And that Rock and Roll music!

    Movies, really?

Ok, on that one I think we can all agree. Although I guess we might disagree on what 'politics' means.

    Big pharma?
    Private prisons?
Our military guarding poppy fields in Afghanistan?

I guess if you go my the metric of “working exactly as it was designed to” then yea, our drug program in this country receives high marks.

Those things are well outside the scope of drug interdiction efforts at the border, which is what I was talking about.
They are in the category of 'the solution doesn't lie in sealing the borders'.

Barfo, I wasn't talking about sealing the border, we don't have an issue at our border. Im talking about other actions that can be taken to prevent drugs for coming in, tougher penalties, improved intelligence to better track smugglers down, and improved awareness of use, in communities and schools with quick action. Anyone that distributes drugs to kids should be penalized to the max, imo.
So you don't think violence and heavy drug use for example does't have any kind of effect on youngsters that are exposed to it or even addicted to it?
Whats Ive always thought was hypocritical was those that participate in violent (rape, abuse, murder, drugs, etc.) movies that are exposed to young people and then become a voice against such actions. They are driven by money and don't give a crap about what they portray on screen. Maybe not all, but a large percentage.

rather than just pick apart what people express, why not offer up some ideas or creative strategies in your view?

Im not sure there has ever been one of my post where you haven't tried to pick apart or punch aside rather than possibly offering some common ground or insights of your own.
Oh well, I get it, its either black or white no middle ground or compromise. I bring up a better job of addressing drugs entering our country, and you go immedialy go to hurting kids at the border. I never even mention border or the political bs with it all.

Here's an interesting situation. I've seen experts say that marijuana stunts the brain up until one is about 30 years old. This is another reason why although I favor decriminalizing weed to the extent that some states still harshly criminalize it, I oppose it's total legalization. I'm glad I quit over four decades ago.
By the way, one of the funniest movies I ever saw, The Groove Tube, I saw while seriously stoned on weed I smoked and marijuana brownies I ate.

Ok. I misunderstood you then. Drugs necessarily enter the country by crossing a border (on ground, underground, underwater, or in the air), so when you said 'easily come into our country', I assumed you meant crossing the border.

We've tried tougher penalties. Didn't work, but did fill up the prisons.
We have pretty good smuggler interdiction efforts, as I previously said. Maybe we could spend more on that, but I'm not sure it would change much. As I mentioned, there's a huge financial incentive for the smugglers to keep trying.
Education: always good, but not clear to me exactly what to do that we aren't already doing.

No, I don't buy that at all. There probably are certain weak minds that will be negatively influence by movies, but they'll be influenced by something else if not movies. You'd have to ban violence and drug use from movies, books, tv, the news, social media, in person conversation, and people's imaginations. Not going to work.

Well, maybe it's just style, I usually don't see much point of posting 'I agree'. But I note that I did say that I agreed with one of your points above, about congress not getting anything done.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the borders, since that is necessarily where drugs enter the country. My bad.

So you want to know my opinion about how to stop drug use? You can't. It's like trying to stop teenagers from having sex. What you can do is legalize it, tax it, and use the money to provide treatment options for addicts. You'd save a lot of money in law enforcement and the justice system.

And separately, there's the issue of prescription opioid abuse, but that may have been addressed (if you've had surgery or an injury lately, you know that they are now suddenly very very stingy with the painkillers). Doesn't help anyone who is already addicted, but I'd guess it will reduce future abuse substantially.

Thanks for your response. I do agree with legalizing pot, but not heavier drugs. I have close family members a few not here anymore that were addicted to heavier street drugs and it wasn't easy to deal with at all. They all started with pot and casually tried and got used to the other. I think certain people are born with tendency some more than others.
I do believe that certain things that we freely expose kids to can have a life altering effect. Most psychologist will say a young person can be desensitized by to much violence, hate, crime, in movies or certain games. Not all but to many. Look at social media and the bullying that goes on around the clocks rather than just at school and how it has compounded the problem. Suicide rate with young people is increasing because of all the stress from it. Even suicide has been glamorized on the internet from what I understand.
I just think if we as a society wanted to address some of these things we could with more of a since of priority.
