People need to think twice before picking up/carrying around a gun illegally/that doesn't belong to them. Maybe 5 years is long enough to get the point across, maybe not.

I see you would like to make it into a racial issue. I'm not going there.

Oh? Okay. Let's apply that to ALL laws, equally. You know, drug laws, traffic laws, etc etc.

If they have served their time, have been released from prison, following all requirements and restrictions in their post prison release then why shouldn't they be allowed to vote?

People who commit heinous crimes should lose their right to vote. Lesser crimes, no

Convicted felons should not be able to vote.

If you can't be trusted with a firearm, then you can't be trusted to vote.

So throw someone in prison for a bag of weed for personal use just as you would for smuggling a kilo of cocaine?

    Okay. I'm cool with that.

So white-collar criminals get to vote. Because they can totally be trusted with an important piece of paperwork like a ballot....

Show of hands....who wants Bernie Madoff voting?

    No!
I do not want to make it into a racial case. But I highly expect that is exactly what would happen. People often wail about the unfair numbers of Black people being incarcerated or even arrested.

I agree with this. For lower tier offenders that are able to become a contributing member of society.

Maybe. Doing something illegal is doing something illegal. If you have an unlicensed or stolen weapon it is illegal no matter your race.

There is an inequitable number of black people being incarcerated in this country. It is not just something being "whined" about, but a trut statistical point. One that merits dicussion to determine the reasoning and the solution.

Depending on the crime. Just as the time in jail is dependent on the crime. So is the right to vote. So is the the right to bear arms.

If you're going to be allowed to vote again, then you need to show a minimum of 5 years of responsibility after prison before you can go before a judge and ask for that Right back. Get a job, pay your taxes, keep your nose clean of ALL crimes. I would be okay with that.

    No shit!
But take a count of what 25 years tacked on means! Perhaps 75% of those getting the harsh sentence will be Black men as it stands today.
I am ok with it. Are You?

I don't think any weapons needs a license except for a fully automatic weapon. Commonly known as a machine gun but uncommonly owned.

Yes and no. The ATF issues a tax stamp to you once you pass a background check, which can take anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. You must keep that with you at all times that you have a machine gun. There are also laws governing their transfer, which is a whole other ball of wax.

Machine guns are NOT cheap, which is why they are uncommon. A good condition MP5 Navy from 1985 will cost you anywhere from $30,000 to $45,000.

Registering is a bit different, but it varies from State to State. To my knowledge, Washington and Oregon do not have registering requirements, though I believe it is voluntary.

As I said there is an inequitable amount of Black people incarcerated in this country. That is something that needs to be looked at. I don't know how accurate your percentage is. There are a lot of white people and people of other races that have illegal guns. All I will say is people should not have guns illegally. Something needs to be done.

How much did the shooters guns cost? I am sure none of them had $30,000.

I bought my WASR some years back for $325, "new" (the receiver was made in 1973). Today, they go for about $500 to $700, though about $600 is the average.

Now go find an AK-47 with full auto capability. Good luck affording one of those! And if it was made after 1986, forget it; you can't own it without a law letter.
