"The WNBA is literally a welfare league. One kept alive by excess capital generated by male labor (the women's league is a subsidy of the highly profitable NBA). Despite losing money for twenty straight years, and due to fear brought on by political correctness, the NBA keeps the WNBA around to avoid controversy." Title IX is a similar program at the collegiate level. Though many men's sports lose money, women's sports are worse investments in economic terms, so in essence, women are being propped up at the expense of men's labor. Men's programs prop up athletic departments, yet women are given access to a wider variety of sports and are given equal scholarships. At UO, for example, there are four more women's programs than men's programs. Since football takes 85 scholarships, this leaves fewer scholarships to be levied out to other men's sports. Considering that football is a huge risk to any athlete, we are basically telling our boys that their best chance at athletics in college is to play a dangerous sport that might lead to a future of health problems. Now, women, face nothing of this burden. The truth is, that women are not only being propped up by men, but they are being given more opportunity for LESS personal risk and investment. Why aren't these labor issues taken into context when we discuss things such as the patriarchy and the oppression of women? I just want to add, that I was personally affected by this as a youth. At the time, there was one public institution in the entire state with a scholarship baseball program. Meanwhile, UO was busy importing a new women's sport, lacrosse, that no one in Oregon played at the time. Every recruit came from Maryland or the East Coast because that's where they play the sport.
I fully support major male leagues propping up women’s leagues. Girls and women should have outlets to play sports professionally, even if they aren’t a big media hit. The major leagues in this country generate more than enough capital to help support that. There are girls that have worked their entire lives to play sports at a professional level. I understand it gets dicey when you talk about equal pay because the men’s leagues generate so much more money than the women’s, not sure how to mitigate that. Maybe if we lived in a culture where more little girls looked up to strong women as role models, as opposed to women who shake their ass for a living, we would see an increase in popularity of women’s sports and they could generate more revenue. Hopefully that happens.
I love women's sports. I actually prefer women's tennis, volleyball and gymnastics. The WNBA is just not entertaining to me.
The real issue is when people start bitching about the pay gap between male athletes and female athletes. Take the World Cup teams for example. The men make more money because the men's sport MAKES way more money overall. Just because the women have been more successful has no bearing at all. The sport has to make money in order to pay the players more money. Some people don't seem to understand that.
Sounds like a male with insecurities who strokes himself by proclaiming women and girls inferior. There are many forms of entertainment that don't interest me So I don't watch them. If you wish to, as long as no one is getting hurt, fine with me.
I have 4 girls and whether its Sports or whatever they choose I don't want them to be held back just because they are women. That said it is an interesting subject (at least to me). Women's sports for the most part haven't been as popular or profitable as men’s sports. They give it out 200m contracts to NBA players, but if they did that to WNBA players they literally would not have a league. I think the real question I have is how do we increase the popularity of women's sports beyond objectifying girls.
How is stating that they get more collegiate opportunities for less personal risk, and the WNBA makes little to no profit and is propped up by the WNBA... how is that "proclaiming females are inferior"? That sounds like fact-based information.
It's not women's fault that football uses up 85 scholarships, or that it's dangerous to play. Maybe getting rid of football - you could replace it with, say, lacrosse - would be a good way to even things up. barfo
Football is also by far the most profitable of the Sports. If they took away CFB, would most athletic departments even exist?
I too love women's gymnastics and you can add to that women's high diving. I use to love the swimsuit competition in women's beauty pageants which I also considered a sport, okay, a men's sport but then I am a man.
