Old English...Now I know why you are BARFO! I bet you blew chips all over the place too. I at least drank Bohemian a sure step up!
Those are my favorites. Go with a guide. Ive done both rivers several times. Last time out, 3 years ago. I nailed this one.
The Rogue and Umpqua systems are like a completely different world compared to other Oregon rivers. My favorite was fishing for "half pounders" in the Rogue. They are Steelhead that go out to the ocean but come back up stream in 6 months rather than the usual longer time for Steelhead. There are only a handful of rivers that have them. They come up in thick schools and make for a really fun and tasty day.
Is there a specific time of year you find the Half pounders? In the lower river, say around Reedsport?
Nice Steelhead! Did a lot of that fishing many years ago. Still vividly remenber the whopper I caught on the Little Northfork of the Santiam. Weighed in just a tad over 39 pound.
I think half pounders are only found in Rogue, Klamath, Eel, and Trinity Rivers. And September is a great time to hit the lower Rogue all the way up to Agness.
I'd go for some charter ocean fishing for salmon or bottom fishing if the salmon didn't pan out, that is if you'd have me.
That's where the Umpqua river dumps. The Umpqua is a great salmon fishing river. Just a hop skip and a jump from Coos Bay where two of my buddies lived and one of them stills lives there.
While kokanee fishing, I caught a fish we could not identify, at first. It was a 2# landlocked steelhead. Never knew there was such a thing. Kokanee are landlocked sockeye salmon. So landlocked steelhead while rare, are possible. Good eats. Here is the secret fishing spot, Dworshak reservoir, Idaho The kokanee limit is 25 per day. It is also easy to pick up a limit (6) of smallmouth using the same tackle, just fish close to shore. A few trout also, but not the best trout lake. The koks are just about spawned out for this season. Plan to fish it early spring to mid Aug.
