0 (zero; BrE: /ˈzɪərəʊ/ or AmE: /ˈziːroʊ/) is both a number[1] and the numerical digit used to represent that number in numerals. It fulfills a central role in mathematics as the additive identity of the integers, real numbers, and many other algebraic structures. As a digit, 0 is used as a placeholder in place value systems. Names for the number 0 in English include zero, nought or (US) naught (/ˈnɔːt/), nil, or — in contexts where at least one adjacent digit distinguishes it from the letter "O" — oh or o (/ˈoʊ/). Informal or slang terms for zero include zilch and zip.[2] Ought and aught (/ˈɔːt/), as well as cipher, have also been used historically.[3]

    Etymology
Main articles: Names for the number 0 and Names for the number 0 in English
The word zero came into the English language via French zéro from Italian zero, Italian contraction of Venetian zevero form of 'Italian zefiro via ṣafira or ṣifr.[4] In pre-Islamic time the word ṣifr (Arabic صفر) had the meaning 'empty'.[5] Sifr evolved to mean zero when it was used to translate śūnya (Sanskrit: शून्य) from India.[5] The first known English use of zero was in 1598.[6]

The Italian mathematician Fibonacci (c.1170–1250), who grew up in North Africa and is credited with introducing the decimal system to Europe, used the term zephyrum. This became zefiro in Italian, and was then contracted to zero in Venetian. The Italian word zefiro was already in existence (meaning "west wind" from Latin and Greek zephyrus) and may have influenced the spelling when transcribing Arabic ṣifr.[7]

    Modern usage
There are different words used for the number or concept of zero depending on the context. For the simple notion of lacking, the words nothing and none are often used. Sometimes the words nought, naught and aught[8] are used. Several sports have specific words for zero, such as nil in football, love in tennis and a duck in cricket. It is often called oh in the context of telephone numbers. Slang words for zero include zip, zilch, nada, and scratch. Duck egg or goose egg are also slang for zero.[9]

Ancient Egyptian numerals were base 10. They used hieroglyphs for the digits and were not positional. By 1740 BC, the Egyptians had a symbol for zero in accounting texts. The symbol nfr, meaning beautiful, was also used to indicate the base level in drawings of tombs and pyramids and distances were measured relative to the base line as being above or below this line.[10

See, even the inventors thought a Zero was beautiful. Not a bad thing at all...

Yeah, not bad. Almost like watching Danforth keep jumping on here, proclaiming his righteousness while he mines belly button lint searching for his argument.

Holy shit, this thread has 746 posts? No way I'm reading through all of it.

I'll say this about Danforth though. He admitted on air that he makes bets with people and expects them to hold up their end if they lose but if he loses he won't ever "pay" up. That is one of the lowest forms of people around besides the obvious stuff like murderers, rapists, child/women abusers.

Who is Taylor Danforth, and why does she use a name that either would be a character on Dynasty or as a stripper?

This is the thread that led to me adopting "Chris the Zero" as my twitter handle. Proud to be a zero!

It was telling of what he thought of others and how high he viewed himself. You have veterans that have served our country and many that have accomplished far more than he has that he labeled a zero. I tried finding him on Twitter with no luck. Anyone surprised?

Bunker was cool as hell though. Sort of like Demers. Not sure if either are or were going to be great radio personalities. Will and did give them time though since they seem like every day joes without an ego.

The "zeros" thing was completely tongue-in-cheek. His absence from Twitter has many aspects. Taylor's a good dude; I don't have a negative word to say about him.

There was another thread that someone posted a link to this thread in, therefore I clicked on it to read what happened and then realized I didn't want to ready nearly 500 posts on that guy.
