Iowa keeps Big Ten perfect, rallies 79-72 over Cincinnati

Iowa kept up the Big Ten's blitz through its first six games in the NCAA Tournament.

Luka Garza scored 20 points, Jordan Bohannon made a three-point play during the Hawkeyes' closing surge and the No. 10 seed in the South Region kept its league unblemished a while longer by rallying for a 79-72 victory over No. 7 seed Cincinnati on Friday.

Spartans rout Gophers, return to Sweet 16 1st time since '15

Michigan State doesn't just hope to get to the Sweet 16 each year. It expects it.

The Spartans played with that attitude, and then some, rolling past Minnesota 70-50 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night to advance to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2015.

Michigan returning to Sweet 16 after toppling Florida 64-49

Michigan's biggest concern against Florida was facing the Gators' lockdown defense.

The solution? Beat Florida at its own game.

Michigan is back in the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive year after pulling away for a 64-49 win in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The Wolverines held Florida to its lowest point total of the season.

Purdue holds off Tennessee 99-94 in OT

Down two to Tennessee with 2.7 seconds left, Purdue narrowly avoided a 5-second call before Carsen Edwards took a pass in the corner and heaved up a 3-point attempt that bounced off the rim.

But a whistle gave Edwards and the Boilermakers a reprieve.

Lamonte' Turner bumped into Edwards after he released the shot and the Big Ten's leading scorer went to the line for three free throws with 1.7 seconds left. Edwards missed the first, steadied himself, and knock down the next two to force overtime. Given a second chance to put away the Volunteers, the Boilermakers got it done.

Edwards finished with 29 points as Purdue advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000, beating Tennessee 99-94 on Thursday night after blowing an 18-point lead.

Freshmen lead Michigan State past LSU and into Elite Eight

Matt McQuaid could not believe LSU was giving Michigan State freshmen Aaron Henry and Gabe Brown so much room at the 3-point line.

"They were like 3 or 4 feet off Gabe on that one 3," McQuaid said. "I was like, `Dang, do they know he can shoot?"

Henry scored a career-best 20 and Brown had a career-high 15 as the second-seeded Spartans beat third-seeded LSU 80-63 on Friday night to move on to the NCAA Tournament's East Region final. Coach Tom Izzo's upperclassman-heavy team is one victory against Duke away from its first Final Four appearance since 2015 -- and the freshmen led the way.

Michigan State knocks off Duke 68-67 to make Final Four

Cassius Winston missed an open jump shot but was right there for the rebound. Without hesitating, he stepped back and swished a 3-pointer.

"Now is not the time to doubt yourself," Winston said. "Now's not the time to shy away from those big moments."

The biggest moment for Michigan State is still to come after Winston led the Spartans back to the Final Four for the first time since 2015.

Michigan State beat Duke 68-67 on Sunday to knock the overall top seed out of the NCAA Tournament in what likely was the end of Zion Williamson's college career. Winston took over the game when his team faced its biggest deficit, stealing the show from Williamson with 20 points and 10 assists in a do-it-all performance fittingly with Magic Johnson there to see it.

Howard returns to Michigan as new hoops coach

Miami Heat assistant and former Michigan star Juwan Howard has been named the new head coach of the Wolverines, the university announced Wednesday.

Howard received a five-year deal, starting at $2 million annually, Michigan said.

He replaces John Beilein, who left Michigan last week to become the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Beilein was with the Wolverines for 12 seasons, leading them to two national championship games.

Smith, Morsell carry No. 7 Maryland past Holy Cross 95-71

Chasing a bunch of quick, athletic players around the basketball court can be pretty tiring for a team with a half-dozen guys 6-foot-7 or taller.

Fortunately for Maryland coach Mark Turgeon, if one of his players gets weary, there's always someone to replace him.

Taking advantage of a roster deep with height and talent, No. 7 Maryland launched a season of high hopes by defeating Holy Cross 95-71 Tuesday night.

Revamped backcourt helps No. 23 Purdue get past Green Bay

Jahaad Proctor and Eric Hunter Jr. gave Purdue's revamped backcourt a completely different look Wednesday night.

If the new tag-team tandem keeps operating at peak proficiency, the Boilermakers again could pose major problems for opponents.

Proctor scored 26 points in his first game at Mackey Arena, Hunter added 15 and No. 23 Purdue pulled away from Green Bay for a 79-57 victory -- the Boilermakers' seventh straight opening-night win.

No. 18 Ohio State pulls away to beat Cincinnati 64-56

Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann was so exasperated with his team's offense at halftime of Wednesday's season opener against Cincinnati that he tore up the game plan and started over from scratch.

The adjustments led to the 18th-ranked Buckeyes rallying from a seven-point first half deficit to turn back the visiting Bearcats 64-56 in a rare regular season match-up between the state's two largest universities.

Smith, Cowan spark No. 7 Maryland's rally past Rhode Island

Maryland switched its defense and steadied its offense in the second half Saturday to overcome a scare against Rhode Island.

Jalen Smith had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Anthony Cowan Jr. scored all 14 of his points in the second half and turnover-prone No. 7 Maryland overcame a sloppy start and a double-digit deficit, beating Rhode Island 73-55.

No. 18 Ohio State routs UMass Lowell 76-56

No. 18 Ohio State hopes the latest tuneup game will have its young players ready to go against a top 10 team this week.

The Buckeyes routed UMass-Lowell 76-56 on Sunday to take a 2-0 record into an early season matchup with No. 10 Villanova at home Wednesday night.

Winston plays after brother's death, Spartans win easily

Cassius Winston breezed smoothly toward the basket for a layup. Then he checked out of the game moments later, stopping for a hug with coach Tom Izzo on the way back to join his teammates on the sideline.

This was a weekend when basketball was put in perspective -- but maybe provided a bit of comfort as well.

Playing a night after the death of his brother, Winston had 17 points and 11 assists to lift No. 1 Michigan State to an emotional 100-47 victory over Binghamton in the Spartans' home opener Sunday night. Zachary Winston, Cassius' younger brother, died after being hit by a westbound Amtrak train in Albion on Saturday night. He was a basketball player at Albion College.

Hot start helps No. 18 Ohio State rout No. 10 Villanova

Not even Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann saw this coming.

His 18th-ranked Buckeyes looked NCAA Tournament-ready in their third game, racing out to a big lead, playing solid defense and smothering No. 10 Villanova 76-51 on Wednesday night for a significant early-season victory.

Hall layup leads No. 3 Michigan State over No. 12 Seton Hall

No. 3 Michigan State and No. 12 Seton Hall put on a mid-November show worthy of March Madness.

It was showdown of two of college basketball's best teams and a showcase of two of the nation's marquee players.

Of course, the eventual hero was a freshman who had failed to score a point in his first two games. That's college basketball, though.

Freshman Malik Hall hit a layup with 26 seconds to play and scored all 17 of his points in the second half as Michigan State overcame a late five-point deficit to Seton Hall 76-73 Thursday night.

No. 7 Maryland gets defensive in 80-50 rout of Oakland

If there’s been one discernable flaw about the play of No. 7 Maryland this season, it’s that the Terrapins have been slow to take charge against lesser opponents.

Such was the case again Saturday, although part of the problem was the deliberate pace set by Oakland.

Once Maryland got rolling, however, the outcome was never in doubt. Combining a balanced attack with a strong defensive effort, the Terrapins breezed to an 80-50 victory.
