No. 24 Auburn beats Davidson 76-66 in Veterans Classic

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl had just finished dissecting the Tigers' workmanlike win over Davidson when someone asked how he and his players enjoyed their visit to the Naval Academy as the featured team of the Veterans Classic.

Pearl grinned, and his eyes brightened.

"To hear you say we're the featured team, I have to smile because we've come a long way," said Pearl, who took Auburn to the Final Four last season.

Pearl had many more thanks to dole out after Auburn (2-0) beat the Wildcats (0-1) 76-66, and his appreciation had little to do with screens, rebounds or 3-pointers.

Okoro's layup lifts No. 22 Auburn past South Alabama, 70-69

Coach Bruce Pearl has worked wonders as Auburn's basketball coach, leading the Tigers to their first Final Four last season.

Now, he's trying to do the same for the entire state of Alabama. Tuesday night at Mobile's Mitchell Center went a long way toward accomplishing that.

Freshman Isaac Okoro made a layup with 2.9 seconds left to lift the No. 22 Tigers to a 70-69 victory over South Alabama in front of 10,068 enthusiastic fans -- the most ever to see a game in the arena located about 230 miles southwest of Auburn's campus.

Lewis helps No. 15 Florida to tight win over Towson

Boasting a No. 6 ranking before the season started, Florida has resembled more of a pretender than a contender in the early going.

Freshman Scottie Lewis scored 15 points in his first start, and the 15th-ranked Gators escaped with a 66-60 victory over Towson on Thursday night.

No. 9 Kentucky gets another scare, holds off Utah Valley

John Calipari breathed a sigh of relief after his team survived another scare.

Ashton Hagans scored a career-high 26 points, and No. 9 Kentucky fought through another close game against what should have been a lesser opponent, beating Utah Valley 82-74 on Monday night.

Auburn quickly left undersized and overmatched Colgate with no room for error.

The 19th-ranked Tigers started 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the opening four minutes, putting an early stamp on what became a 91-62 victory on Monday night.

No. 20 Tennessee breezes past Alabama State 76-41

Tennessee's stingy defense made up for its own poor outside shooting as the Volunteers had no trouble extending the longest active Division I home winning streak.

Jordan Bowden scored 16 points Wednesday night to help No. 20 Tennessee trounce Alabama State 76-41 for its 29th straight home victory.

No. 9 Kentucky pulls away from Mount St. Mary’s 82-62

Just as No. 9 Kentucky seemed destined to grind past another supposedly overmatched foe, it clicked into high gear against Mount St. Mary’s to finally win comfortably.

Immanuel Quickley had eight of his 13 second-half points during an 18-3 run that helped the Wildcats pull away from the Mountaineers 82-62 on Friday night.

Tyrese Maxey scores 21 points, No. 9 Kentucky routs Lamar

Tyrese Maxey had a breakout performance in Kentucky's season-opener and it took five games for the freshman guard to duplicate the outing against Michigan State.

Maxey scored 21 points -- five shy of his career high -- and the Wildcats made a season-high 10 3-pointers in an 81-56 victory over Lamar on Sunday night.

Doughty helps No. 18 Auburn rout New Mexico 84-59

The Auburn Tigers are an unfinished product in the eyes of Bruce Pearl. That should cause opposing coaches sleepless nights.

"We just have to keep getting better," Pearl said after his No. 18 Auburn Tigers routed New Mexico 84-59 in the second game of the Legends Classic Monday night at the Barclays Center.

No. 18 Auburn routs Richmond to win Legends Classic

Auburn is first and foremost a school that’s known for its football program.

Which is fine with Bruce Pearl, who believes the Tigers are “a pretty good basketball team right now.”

And he has the school’s first in-season tournament championship since 2004 to make his argument for him.

“Our guys came to Auburn to make history,” Pearl said after No. 18 Auburn to a 79-65 win over Richmond in the championship game of the Legends Classic on Tuesday night at Barclays Center.
