Surging No. 10 Ohio State routs Stetson 86-51

Fresh from routing Villanova and vaulting into the top 10 for the first time in two seasons, Ohio State kept up the momentum in another tuneup game that the Buckeyes likely could have won with half the effort.

The No. 10 Buckeyes steamrolled Stetson 86-51 on Monday night without drama as coach Chris Holtmann emptied the bench and got points from 11 of the 13 players who participated.

There wasn't as much energy in the building as last Wednesday night when the Buckeyes knocked off then-No. 10 Villanova 76-51.

Smith scores 17 to help No. 6 Maryland beat Fairfield 74-55

The time for experimenting with the roster and toying with the opposition is over for No. 6 Maryland.

After the Terrapins breezed past Fairfield 74-55 on Tuesday night, coach Mark Turgeon acknowledged that he knew before the opening tip that the outcome was never in doubt.

No. 10 Ohio St keeps rolling, routs Purdue Fort Wayne 85-46

Ohio State broke into the top 10 partially because of its stellar defense so far this season.

That defense was on display again Friday night as the Buckeyes hosted Purdue Fort Wayne, which became the fifth straight Ohio State opponent to shoot less than 33% from the floor. The 10th-ranked Buckeyes pulled away in the second half for an 85-46 rout of the Mastadons, who shot 32% (17 of 54).

Cowan has 16 points, No. 6 Maryland beats George Mason 86-63

Playing at home against lesser competition over the first five games of the season, No. 6 Maryland didn’t necessarily have to jump out to a big lead to win.

That doesn’t mean the Terrapins’ worrisome pattern of starting slow isn’t a potential problem.

After trailing George Mason for much of the first half, Maryland finally righted itself and remained unbeaten with an 86-63 victory Friday night.

Ohio State withstands Kent State rally before winning 71-52

Ohio State had run through its first five opponents this season by an average margin of victory of 25 points.

But instate rival Kent State came into St. John Arena with other ideas Monday night. The Golden Flashes rallied from down 17 points to tie the No. 10 Buckeyes at 48-48 midway through the second half. Order was restored, however, as Ohio State reeled off 17 straight points and pulled away for the 71-52 win.

No. 3 Michigan State holds off Georgia 93-85 in Maui

Cassius Winston sat in the Lahaina Civic Center locker room, the tears forming a puddle by his feet as his teammates warmed up on the court below.

It's been less than three weeks since his brother's death and Winston's pain is still searing, his heart still heavy.

Once the ball was in his hands, Winston felt a sense of normalcy, found a rhythm that had been missing since tragedy struck.

Even then, Georgia's Anthony Edwards nearly spoiled it.

Winston had 28 points and eight assists, and No. 3 Michigan State withstood Edwards' second-half outburst to beat Georgia 93-85 at the Maui Invitational on Tuesday.

No. 3 Michigan State beats UCLA 75-62 at Maui Invitational

Michigan State opened the Maui Invitational with an ugly loss, had to chase around a smaller team to win its second game and outlasted a long, athletic team to finish fifth.

The Spartans would have much rather won the championship, but the trip to paradise should help them in the long run.

Cassius Winston scored 20 points, Xavier Tillman had 14 and No. 3 Michigan State knocked off UCLA 75-62 in the Maui Invitational fifth-place game on Wednesday.

Cowan scores 30, No. 5 Maryland rallies to beat Temple 76-69

Six games into the season, Mark Turgeon isn’t so sure No. 5 Maryland deserves its lofty ranking.

Yes, the Terrapins (6-0) are unbeaten and have high expectations, however they’ve yet to put together the kind of complete performance their coach has been looking for.

"Just because we have a number in front of our name, I don't think we've really earned it to be honest with you. Hopefully we do at some point,” Turgeon said after Anthony Cowan Jr. scored five of his career-best 30 points in the final minutes to help the Terps overcome a slow start and beat Temple 76-69 in the opening game of the Orlando Invitational on Thursday.

Second-half surge carries No. 5 Maryland over Harvard 80-73

No. 5 Maryland is answering the challenge against stronger competition in the Orlando Invitational.

Coach Mark Turgeon's just wondering what it'll take to get Terrapins (7-0) going a little earlier in games, regardless of who they're playing.

"I think we've beaten two NCAA tournament-type teams down here so far, and we get to play for a championship on Sunday," Turgeon said after Friday's 80-73 victory over Harvard in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament at Disney World.

Michigan beats No. 8 Gonzaga 82-64 to win Atlantis title

Juwan Howard was standing at the center of his Michigan team posing for oncourt pictures when he finally grabbed the hefty Battle 4 Atlantis championship trophy from the table in front of him.

The first-year coach tipped it backward to peek at the front and the large seashell on its base, then used both hands to hoist it above his head with a celebratory scream.

"It's gratifying to be able to hold up that trophy and say, you know what? All that sacrifice we put through, all the hard work we put in, it was well worth it," Howard said.

There was no arguing with the results, either. His Wolverines again overwhelmed a highly ranked opponent with their flowing offense to beat No. 8 Gonzaga 82-64 in Friday's title game. And that closed a three-game run that saw Michigan go from arriving in the Bahamas as an afterthought in an eight-team tournament featuring four AP Top 25 teams to commanding everyone's attention.

Purdue upsets No. 20 VCU, 59-56, in Emerald Coast Classic

With both teams struggling from the free throw line, Purdue's Eric Hunter Jr. and Jahaad Proctor made foul shots when it counted and VCU didn't.

Hunter and Proctor also each scored 12 points to lead the Boilermakers to a 59-56 upset of the No. 20 Rams on Friday night in the Emerald Coast Classic.

No. 5 Maryland beats Marquette to win Orlando Invitational

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon didn’t have to say much to get the attention of his fifth-ranked Terrapins.

Not with Marquette’s Markus Howard coming off a 51-point performance. Not with a title on the line at the Orlando Invitational.

“I had a feeling our guys were going to step up, knowing it was a championship game,” Turgeon said after Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 22 points and backcourt mate Darryl Morsell spearheaded a stellar defensive effort that limited the high-scoring Howard to six points in Maryland’s 84-63 victory Sunday at Disney World. “I know my guys, and I knew they were going to step up.”

Jalen Smith's double-double helps Maryland rout Notre Dame

Maryland needed some time to get its offense going Wednesday night against Notre Dame. The third-ranked Terrapins’ defense, though, was never a problem.

Maryland held the Fighting Irish below 30 percent shooting in both halves, Jalen Smith had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and the Terps cruised to a 72-51 victory in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Washington, No. 6 Ohio State beat No. 7 North Carolina 74-49

Sixth-ranked Ohio State spent the last 15 minutes of Wednesday night's trip to seventh-ranked North Carolina knocking down shots, making the Tar Heels work for every look and ultimately driving the blue-clad home fans toward the exits well before the final horn.

The result was a second attention-grabbing blowout by the Buckeyes against a ranked opponent, this one handing Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams his most lopsided home loss at UNC.

Duane Washington Jr. had 18 points and Ohio State shot 54% after halftime to beat North Carolina 74-49 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It came roughly three weeks after the Buckeyes routed then-No. 10 Villanova by 25 points during an unbeaten start.

Stifling defense helps Purdue blow out No. 5 Virginia 69-40

Purdue coach Matt Painter packed his lineup with more scoring punch Wednesday night.

Sasha Stefanovic made sure it paid off.

Just hours after learning he would make his first career start, the sophomore guard poured in a career-high 20 points, Jahaad Proctor added 16 and the Boilermakers shut down No. 5 Virginia with a 69-40 rout in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

No. 4 Michigan tops Iowa 103-91 despite 44 points from Garza

Franz Wagner and No. 4 Michigan rebounded from their first loss of the season with quite an offensive turnaround.

    From 43 points to 103.

Wagner led a balanced scoring effort with 18 points, and the Wolverines opened Big Ten play with a 103-91 victory over Iowa on Friday night, overcoming 44 points by Luka Garza. Michigan bounced back from its 58-43 loss to top-ranked Louisville on Tuesday night. In fact, the Wolverines exceeded their point total from Tuesday before halftime against Iowa.

Wesson, No. 6 Ohio State unload on Penn State 106-74

Penn State pulled within eight points of Ohio State just 8 minutes into the second half, and it looked like the game was on.

    The Buckeyes had other plans.

Kaleb Wesson scored 28 points and had 10 rebounds for his ninth career double-double, and No. 6 Ohio State scored 43 points in the game's final 12 minutes to rout Penn State 106-74 on Saturday.
