No. 24 Cincinnati holds off Wichita State for 66-63 victory

As Cincinnati expected, Wichita State had one last run down the stretch -- enough to pull even, but not overtake the No. 24 Bearcats.

Nysier Brooks scored 13 points and Cane Broome hit the go-ahead layup with 23.5 seconds left to give No. 24 Cincinnati a 66-63 victory over Wichita State in Saturday's semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament.

Tall Fall leads ninth-seeded UCF to first NCAA win over VCU

Tacko Fall was huge factor in bringing UCF its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Now, the Knights will see how college basketball's tallest player at 7-foot-6 can perform against overall top seed Duke.

Fall had 13 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks as ninth-seeded UCF defeated No. 8 seed VCU 73-58 on Friday night to set up a match with the Blue Devils on Sunday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Houston moves into Sweet 16 for first time in 35 years

Houston's fans chanted "Sweet 16" in the final minute of the Cougars' NCAA Tournament win over Ohio State.

The celebration was long overdue -- it's been 35 years since the Cougars have made this trip.

"I saw a lot of proud Cougars up there behind us tonight," Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said, "and the ones I was happiest for were the guys that's been supporting this program since those days."

Corey Davis scored 21 points to help Houston beat the Buckeyes 74-59 in a second-round Midwest Region game Sunday night. It marked the Cougars' 33rd win of the season -- breaking the school's season record set by the 1983-84 team. That was the last Houston squad to reach the Sweet 16.

Wiseman has 28 and 11 in winning debut for No. 14 Memphis

After missing the preseason exhibition games with annoying aches and pains, touted freshman James Wiseman finally made his debut for No. 14 Memphis.

    It was worth the wait.

Wiseman, the nation's top-rated recruit, had 28 points and 11 rebounds as the Tigers beat South Carolina State 97-64 on Tuesday night.

Wiseman gets restraining order to play; Memphis wins

James Wiseman had another dominant game for the No. 14 Memphis Tigers. All anyone wants to talk about is Wiseman's status with the NCAA.

Wiseman had 17 points and nine rebounds hours after getting a temporary restraining order to play amid an NCAA ineligibility ruling, leading Memphis past Illinois-Chicago 92-46 on Friday night.

Quinones, Achiuwa send No. 13 Memphis past Alcorn St 102-56

Despite playing their first game without heralded recruit James Wiseman, the No. 13 Memphis Tigers had little trouble with Alcorn State.

That's what happens when you have the top recruiting class in the nation.

Freshman Lester Quinones had 21 points and 10 rebounds and fellow freshman Precious Achiuwa added 20 points Saturday, sending No. 13 Memphis to a 102-56 romp over Alcorn State.

Achiuwa scores 25, No. 16 Memphis holds off Ole Miss 87-86

The 16th-ranked Memphis Tigers already knew they would have to play a long stretch without James Wiseman, their top freshman.

Then another freshman, Lester Quinones, went to the locker room with an undisclosed injury after playing less than nine minutes against Mississippi.

Good thing coach Penny Hardaway has other a handful of very talented freshmen.

Precious Achiuwa scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while D.J. Jeffries added 23, including a dunk with a second left as Memphis held off the Rebels, 87-86, on Saturday for its third consecutive victory without Wiseman.

Achiuwa, No. 15 Memphis surge back to beat UAB 65-57

Trailing by 20 during a dreadful start, coach Penny Hardaway and No. 15 Memphis kept their cool even as they staggered toward halftime.

In the locker room during the break, Hardaway turned up the intensity -- and that finally got the Tigers on track.

"It wasn't a pleasant conversation at halftime," he said, "but they responded."

Precious Achiuwa scored eight of his 14 points in the final 4 minutes, and Memphis rallied from a big deficit to beat upset-minded UAB 65-57 Saturday.

No. 13 Memphis outlasts No. 19 Tennessee 51-47

Even the newcomers on Memphis’ freshmen-laden roster who didn’t play in a loss to Tennessee last year understood the importance of avenging that defeat.

The 13th-ranked Tigers got their revenge Saturday. Not only did Memphis beat its in-state rival, it snapped the longest active home winning streak of any Division I team and prevented Tennessee coach Rick Barnes from reaching a career milestone.

Damion Baugh sank a 3-pointer with 1:43 remaining to put Memphis ahead for good and the Tigers outlasted No. 19 Tennessee 51-47 to end the Volunteers’ 31-game home winning streak.

Cincinnati does damage inside, upends No. 21 Tennessee 78-66

A defense that had been among the nation's best got shredded, and that wasn't the only thing that went wrong for the 21st-ranked Volunteers in their first true road game.

Tennessee couldn't hit a 3 and couldn't run anything consistently on offense during a 78-66 loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday night that left coach Rick Barnes befuddled.

No. 11 Memphis overcomes turnovers vs Jackson State 77-49

Memphis had a terrible time handling the ball. But it could rebound and it could shoot.

And that was enough for an eighth straight victory.

Precious Achiuwa had 20 points and nine rebounds and DJ Jeffries added 13 points for No. 11 Memphis, which defeated Jackson State 77-49 on Saturday.

Achiuwa, Quinones lead No. 9 Memphis past New Orleans 97-55

Returning from a broken right hand, Memphis guard Lester Quinones showed his 3-point shooting didn’t suffer during his absence.

Quinones, who missed five game with the injury, returned Saturday scoring 13 points while converting all three of his 3-point attempts as No. 9 Memphis built a first-half lead and easily defeated New Orleans 97-55.

Quinones, Baugh lead No. 9 Memphis past Tulane 84-73

Memphis finally controlled its turnovers and had a season high in assists. That combination helped the No. 9 Tigers take a successful first step in American Athletic Conference play.

Lester Quinones scored 16 points, Damion Baugh finished with 15 and Memphis weathered a second-half rally to defeat Tulane 84-73 on Monday night in the teams' conference opener.

Burton leads No. 23 Wichita State past No. 21 Memphis

    http://www.espn.co.uk/video/clip?id=28454815

Erik Stevenson, Wichita State's sophomore team leader, flexed his arms, puffed his chest and jutted out his chin as he stared down the screaming fans.

But he wasn't celebrating his own play -- instead, it was a tough layup that teammate Jamarius Burton converted while being fouled.

In Stevenson's mind, it was the type of play that represented No. 23 Wichita State powering its way past No. 21 Memphis 76-67 on Thursday night.
