Michigan State beats Wake Forest 27-21 in Pinstripe Bowl

Mike Panasiuk ripped off his Michigan State helmet and hoisted it in the air, unleashing the hidden part of his scruffy beard that's normally a no-no at Yankee Stadium. Facial hair is banned for all Yankees, and so, for the Spartans, are the kind of acts of unsportsmanlike conduct that get a big guy like Panasiuk penalized.

The penalty was worth it for the burly Spartans defensive tackle, who rumbled 14 yards on an interception for his first career touchdown. His brother, Jacub, triggered the pick when he swatted the ball at the line. It took a bounce off a fallen player, and into Panasiuk's hands.

"Shoutout to Mike," Michigan State's Kenny Willekes said. "That's pretty damn cool to score a touchdown at Yankee Stadium."

Brian Lewerke took it from there in his final game. Lewerke threw for 320 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score in Michigan State's 27-21 victory over Wake Forest on Friday night in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.

Smith-Marsette has 3 TDs, Iowa beats USC in Holiday Bowl

A tough month for the Iowa Hawkeyes ended with a rousing Holiday Bowl victory over Southern California that would have made Hayden Fry and Bump Elliott proud.

Ihmir Smith-Marsette scored on a 6-yard run, a 98-yard kickoff return and a 12-yard reception -- all in the second quarter -- to lead No. 19 Iowa to a 49-24 rout of No. 22 USC on Friday night.

No. 13 Penn State tops No. 15 Memphis 53-39 in Cotton Bowl

All-America linebacker Micah Parsons led the big blitz for Penn State, and he had Brady White all wrapped up when the Memphis quarterback suddenly flipped away the ball -- right into the hands of Garrett Taylor.

On a day when the Nittany Lions' defense gave up its most points and yards all season, Taylor turned that gift into a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 53-39 victory over the Group of Five Tigers on Saturday in the highest-scoring Cotton Bowl ever.

Tyler Johnson's 2 TDs help Minnesota to Outback Bowl win over Auburn

With the clock winding down on a dominating performance in the Outback Bowl, Minnesota fans broke into a chant of "Row the boat, row the boat, row the boat."

The never-give-up mantra coach P.J. Fleck used to help change the culture of Golden Gophers football continues to inspire a program determined to recapture its glory days.

"We challenged every one of our players: You want to be a blue blood, you've got to beat the blue bloods," Fleck said Wednesday after No. 16 Minnesota beat No. 9 Auburn 31-24 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score.

2 ex-Nebraska football players charged with sexually assaulting student

Two former Nebraska football players have been charged with first-degree sexual assault in connection with the reported rape of a female student in August, according to court documents released Wednesday and information provided by law enforcement.

Redshirt freshmen Katerian LeGrone, 19, and Andre Hunt, 20, are scheduled to appear in Lancaster County Court on Thursday. They were arrested Dec. 10, less than a week after a university investigation found them responsible for having violated the school's sexual misconduct policies related to the incident reported on Aug. 25, 2019.

Big Ten Statement on 2020-21 Fall Season

We are facing uncertain and unprecedented times, and the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, game officials, and others associated with our sports programs and campuses remain our number one priority.

To that end, the Big Ten Conference announced today that if the Conference is able to participate in fall sports (men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball) based on medical advice, it will move to Conference-only schedules in those sports. Details for these sports will be released at a later date, while decisions on sports not listed above will continue to be evaluated. By limiting competition to other Big Ten institutions, the Conference will have the greatest flexibility to adjust its own operations throughout the season and make quick decisions in real-time based on the most current evolving medical advice and the fluid nature of the pandemic.

This decision was made following many thoughtful conversations over several months between the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors, Directors of Athletics, Conference Office staff, and medical experts including the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee.

Entire Michigan State football team in 14-day quarantine

Michigan State's entire football team will quarantine or self-isolate for 14 days after a second staff member and one athlete tested positive for COVID-19, the school announced Friday.

"As part of the athletic department's return to campus policy, student-athletes quarantine when coming into close contact with an individual who tests positive for COVID-19," the school said in a prepared statement. "The university has designated areas available to house individuals in quarantine as needed based upon the living arrangements for student-athletes."

Finally! No. 5 Ohio State opens against rebuilding Nebraska

Ohio State receiver Chris Olave took a wrong turn in the end zone last December and has been itching to get back on the football field ever since. He’s not the only one.

Olave’s miscommunication with quarterback Justin Fields led to an interception and sank a comeback bid by the Buckeyes late in the playoff semifinal game against Clemson.

“I don’t think I’ve gotten over it still,” Olave said recently.

Michael Penix forced overtime with a 2-point conversion run with 22 seconds left, then scored on a diving 2-point conversion to give Indiana a season-opening 36-35 upset victory over No. 8 Penn State — ending the Big Ten’s longest streak of consecutive losses to Top 10 teams at 42.

Ramsey, Anderson lead way, Northwestern pounds Terps 43-3

Northwestern quarterback Peyton Ramsey, left, looks to throw a pass against
Maryland during the first half of an NCAA college football game in Evanston, Ill., Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020.

Peyton Ramsey sure seemed comfortable in his new surroundings. Northwestern looked like a team out to prove its struggles last season were nothing more than an unpleasant aberration.

It all added up to one lopsided victory and a milestone for coach Pat Fitzgerald.

Ramsey threw for 212 yards in his Northwestern debut, Drake Anderson ran for 103 and the Wildcats gave Fitzgerald his 100th victory, pounding Maryland 43-3 on Saturday night.

Bell shines as Purdue rallies to defeat Iowa 24-20

eceiver David Bell was from the time he came on campus.

“He’s a kid that physically is a mismatch for more players,” O’Connell said. “Even more than physically his mental makeup is extremely impressive. He knows where to be and when to be there. He’s a quarterback’s dream out there.”

Bell caught three touchdown passes from O’Connell, including the game winner, to guide the Boilermakers to a 24-20 victory over Iowa Saturday in Big Ten season opening action.

Maryland celebrate after defeating Minnesota during overtime of an NCAA
college football game, Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, in College Park, Md. Maryland
    won 45-44 in overtime

A back-and-forth game that featured comebacks by both teams, a dozen touchdowns and more than 1,100 yards in offense seemed destined to reach a second overtime before ending abruptly on — of all things — a botched conversion kick.

Minnesota’s Brock Walker sent an extra-point try wide right after the potential tying touchdown, giving Maryland a stunning 45-44 comeback victory Friday night.

Ohio State 38, Penn State 25

Penn State and James Franklin fell 0-2 for the first time since 2012 following a 38-25 loss to Ohio State on Saturday.

That was the first year of the post-Joe Paterno era and Franklin's second season at Vanderbilt. What got Penn State to this point? Mistakes last week, the Buckeyes and their juggernaut this week. Let's break it down.

Penix throws 3 TD passes, No. 17 Indiana tops Rutgers 37-21

Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. throws a pass during the second quarter
of the team's NCAA college football game against Rutgers, Saturday, Oct. 31,
    2020, in Piscataway, N.J

Michael Penix Jr. came through for Indiana again. So did the defense — no need to count the wild play that got called back.

It seems the 17th-ranked Hoosiers have a chance to be the surprise of the Big Ten Conference this season.

Penix had three touchdown tosses and ran for another score and the Hoosiers intercepted three passes and limited Rutgers to 248 yards in a 37-21 win Saturday that almost included a crazy TD.

Michigan in an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, in Ann

Outside of Michigan State’s football program, few expected the Spartans to beat No. 13 Michigan.

The people who mattered, though, had all the confidence they needed to pull off the upset.

Rocky Lombardi threw for 323 yards, including 196 to Ricky White, and three touchdowns to help Michigan State stun the Wolverines 27-24 on Saturday.

Wisconsin has 22 positive COVID-19 cases

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says the total number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Badgers’ football program has increased to 22.

Alvarez told ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday that 12 football players and 10 staffers have tested positive. Alvarez said school officials would decide Tuesday whether to go ahead with the ninth-ranked Badgers’ scheduled Nov. 7 home game with Purdue.

“We’re still having additions in our cases, and that’s something we’ve got to get our arms around and control it,” Alvarez said.
