Rhode Island shuts down Young, Oklahoma in 83-78 win

Here's the skinny on a Philly guard called Fatts: The player with the best nickname in the tournament given because he was a chunky baby turned in the stout performance Rhode Island required to win.

Fatts Russell hit three 3s and showed that -- for this game, at least -- he was the best freshman guard around as he pressured Oklahoma's dynamic scorer Trae Young right out of the NCAA Tournament.

E.C. Matthews hit the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime and one more that sealed it to help Rhode Island hold off Young and beat Oklahoma 83-78 Thursday in the Midwest Region.

Santos-Silva leads No. 25 VCU past St. Francis, 72-58

Marcus Santos-Silva joked that he has a habit of stealing rebounds from teammates.

His guys weren't the only victims on Tuesday night as he had 21 points and 18 rebounds for No. 25 VCU, which used a big early run to take command in a 72-58 victory over St. Francis in the season opener for both teams.

Simms hits late 3s, No. 25 VCU holds off North Texas 59-56

Mike'L Simms didn't care that he had missed all six of his shots when the ball came to him with just over two minutes to play.

When he let fly from the top of the key, it gave No. 25 VCU three critical points in what became a 59-56 victory against North Texas on Friday night.

Santos-Silva, defense lead VCU past No. 23 LSU, 84-82

Will Wade was concerned about turnovers before bringing No. 23 LSU to the Siegel Center, where he spent six seasons and watched VCU frustrate opponents with a frenetic pressing, trapping defensive style. He tried to prepare the Tigers for what they would face.

    It didn't work.

"You can't simulate this," Wade said, gesturing toward the arena where the band is loud, the creative fans sit right on top of the court and the sellout streak has reached 137 games. "You can't simulate what they do, and they do it every night."

Former Wade recruit Marcus Santos-Silva had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and VCU turned 26 turnovers into 37 points in an 84-82 victory Wednesday night. The game ended, fittingly, with Skylar Mays losing control on a desperate drive for a tying basket.

Evans, No. 21 VCU roll over Florida Gulf Coast 78-48

Five consecutive days without a game left No. 21 VCU’s players eager to get back to doing what they do best.

They took it out on Florida Gulf Coast in their return Saturday night, forcing 27 turnovers in a wear-them-down 78-48 runaway.

Evans scores 25 as No. 20 VCU drubs Alabama State 78-62

The players at VCU are making no apologies for what has largely been a soft schedule to date, save for a visit from then-ranked LSU.

"These games prepare us for what we are about to face in the next month," Isaac Vann said after Marcus Evans scored 25 points and No. 20 VCU closed the first half on a big run in a 78-62 victory against Alabama State on Monday night. It was the Rams' third blowout victory in a row, all at the Siegel Center.

Obi Toppin soared to corral a rebound with his left hand and slammed the ball down, his emphatic dunk the signature moment of Dayton's return to the rankings.

Toppin scored 17 points and had that dunk off one of his 10 rebounds Tuesday night, leading No. 19 Dayton to a 99-68 victory over Houston Baptist.

No. 19 Dayton beats Saint Mary's in Jerry Colangelo Classic

Jalen Crutcher is nothing if not an obedient teammate.

"After I made my first shot, my teammates just kept telling me to keep shooting the ball, and that's what I did," Crtcher said.

    He kept making them, too.

Crutcher had a had a season-high 21 points and tied a career high with five 3-pointers in No. 19 Dayton's 78-68 victory over Saint Mary's on Sunday in the Jerry Colangelo Classic at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Ibi Watson felt it was his turn to take the lead in Dayton's impressive early-season surge.

Watson helped No. 14 Dayton emerge from a slow start and scored a season-high 20 points Saturday night as the Flyers pulled away to a 78-47 victory over Drake.

No. 13 Dayton pulls away late for 71-58 win over North Texas

Jalen Crutcher banged knees with a North Texas player and went down hard in the second half. But just as the Flyers have done all season, he was back in place for the big shot at the end.

Crutcher scored 16 points and hit a comeback-blunting 3-pointer Tuesday night, Ryan Mikesell also had 16 points, and No. 13 Dayton finally shook free at the end for a 71-58 victory over North Texas.

Toppin's 31 lead No. 20 Dayton over North Florida 77-59

Obi Toppin took one shot from beyond the arc and missed it. Dayton's slammin' forward didn't attempt another.

The way he and the Flyers were getting to the basket, there was no need.

Toppin scored a career-high 31 points, most of them off dunks and layups, as No. 20 Dayton used its front-line advantage and pulled away from North Florida 77-59 on Monday night.

Toppin scores 20, No. 20 Dayton eases past La Salle 84-58

For most of the 2010s, Dayton had trouble winning in the city of Philadelphia.

In their first game of the '20s, the 20th-ranked Flyers had no problem breaking that trend and showing what could be in store for the rest of the Atlantic 10.

Obi Toppin scored 20 points as Dayton used a big first-half run to cruise past La Salle 84-58 in its conference opener on Thursday night.

Toppin hurts ankle while No. 15 Dayton beats UMass 88-60

Obi Toppin landed with a loud thud and grabbed his left ankle. The capacity crowd at University of Dayton Arena went silent as the Flyers' top player lay on the court.

Dayton's spectacular season had hit a speed bump.

Toppin scored 16 points before leaving with an ankle injury early in the second half Saturday, giving 15th-ranked Dayton a scare while it pulled away to an 88-60 victory over UMass.

Hobbled Toppin carries No. 13 Dayton past VCU, 79-65

As the final minute ticked down, Jalen Crutcher dribbled toward the basket and saw Obi Toppin getting set for one more alley-oop, bad ankle and all.

Pass. Catch. Dunk. The 13th-ranked Flyers did it one more time while finishing off a rival that's gotten the best of them lately.

Toppin scored 24 points on a tender ankle and led a 22-point run in the second half as Dayton beat VCU 79-65 on Tuesday night, ending the Flyers' streak of four straight losses to the Rams.

Crutcher has 23, No. 7 Dayton beats St. Bonaventure 86-60

St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt called two timeouts while trying to halt Dayton's end-of-the-half run. With Jalen Crutcher hitting 3s and Obi Toppin making dunks, it was a futile task.

Crutcher matched his career high with 23 points, Toppin had four dunks, and No. 7 Dayton -- playing with its highest ranking in 52 years -- showed off its versatility while pulling away to an 86-60 victory over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night.
