Three American firefighters died in a water tanker plane crash Thursday while battling wildfires in Australia, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed. Rural Fire Service officials said they had located the plane, a C-130 Hercules, that crashed in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales state. Coulson Aviation in Oregon said in a statement that one of its C-130 Lockheed large air tankers was lost after it left Richmond in New South Wales with retardant for a firebombing mission. It said the accident was “extensive" but had few other details. "We are deeply saddened to confirm there were 3 fatalities," Coulson's statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the three crew members onboard." Berejiklian also gave "heartfelt condolences" to the families and said flags in New South Wales would be flown at half-staff Friday. Coulson grounded other firefighting aircraft as a precaution pending investigation, reducing planes available to firefighters in New South Wales and neighboring Victoria state. The four-propeller Hercules drops more than 15,000 liters (4,000 gallons) of fire retardant in a single pass. The plane crash raises the death toll from the fires to at least 31 since September. 'ALMOST APOCALYPTIC': AMERICAN FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE AUSSIE WILDFIRES The victims have not been identified. “The only thing I have from the field reports are that the plane came down, it's crashed and there was a large fireball associated with that crash,” said Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons. He confirmed that all three were U.S. residents. “There is no indication at this stage of what's caused the accident,” Fitzsimmons said. “Unfortunately, all we've been able to do is locate the wreckage and the crash site and we have not been able to locate any survivors,” he said. Australian Transport Safety Bureau, the national air crash investigator, and state police will investigate the crash site, which firefighters described as an active fire ground. Also Thursday, Canberra Airport closed because of nearby wildfires, and residents south of Australia's capital were told to seek shelter. The blaze started Wednesday but strong winds and high temperatures caused conditions in Canberra to deteriorate. A second fire near the airport that started on Thursday morning is at a “watch and act” level. “Arrivals and departures are affected due to aviation firefighting operations,” the airport authority said in a tweet. Another tweet from traffic police said “the fire is moving fast and there are multiple road closures in the area. Please avoid the area. Turns out that one of these pilots went to high school with my wife. He was a 20+ year USAF veteran with over 4000 hours of flight time under his belt including over 2000 hours of Middle East combat flight hours. He was set to retire from the military the first week of March.
