I mean, stuff that was said decades ago?? https://www.foxnews.com/entertainme...p-dogg-imitation-george-wallace-comic-podcast Jimmy Kimmel used 'N-word' in imitation Snoop song in 1996, impersonated comic George Wallace in 2013: audio
The fact is, people's (long) careers are being ended due to indiscretions from their youth....decades ago, etc. Do you think that's fair?
I guess what I meant in the OP is that, apparently, anything you've done or said in life.....even DECADES ago, can and will be used against you in the public spectacle. I suppose, much of the time, those things will go unnoticed. But, hey, be vewy, vewy careful about becoming celebrity, because your career may very well get hung out to dry at the blink of an eye should said indiscretions get exposed. Such is the nature of the beast, I guess. iPhones and internet rule the day. I did find this piece on KM. https://steemit.com/getyerlearnon/@gooddream/jimmy-kimmel-s-karl-malone-skits-are-not-racist For some reason, I'm reminded of this wonderful event.
Not saying it's perfectly OK, it's a little different when you are using it in a song/parody, then when you are referring to people as the N word. The Karl Malone shit tho, that was cringe worthy even back then. I'm not sure why Fox is concerned now about this stuff.
There is some truth to that. The picture of Luann de Lesseps doing Diana Ross wasn't so much black face as it was made out to be. Similar to Kimmel's Malone impersonation (which again, was cringe worthy even back then). Although I'm really not sure why anyone would even do anything close to that ever. It was weird how Robert Downey Jr wore black face in Tropical Thunder. But I think black face is more about mocking/mimicking the racial stereotypes of a person, vs playing a role. (Think Al Jolsen vs Robert Downey Jr in Tropical Thunder). One is done to make fun a group of people seem subhuman/mock their appearance, while the other didn't really make fun of a group of people or mock their appearance. Especially since it's not like RDJ has continued that as a 'character' or bit. Anywho, I do think people over-reacted to her comment, but at the same time, she thinks Jesus is white, so it makes me suspicious in her feelings about the races. There is always context in things.
Wanna know what I find worse than this woman? The kids in the background. I bet they have no clue about history of the flag they are wearing. Just being taught this from their parents. You are right. It wont end.... Very sad..... Everytime I see sometime like this, I ask them why Germany doesn't support the waiving of the swastika flag. I never get a real answer....... Just because you have the right to do something, doesnt mean you should... This is where America is totally fucked. "Its my right, so im gonna do it and fuck anyone else who thinks its wrong." I mean, what are they gaining by waiving this flag? A sense of personal freedom still intact? Is that their reasoning? I say we send all confederate flag waivers to a confederate flag waiving state and kick them out of the USA. Let them fend for themselves then. You want your freedom? You got it. Your free to leave the fucking country.
I agree with you 100%. Cancel culture, especially for things that were funny once but now are seen in a new light, is just wrong.
I don't think "cancel culture"is wrong but, like any movement, can be taken too far. I was fine with people like Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein being "cancelled." Also, when we say "were funny once," we also have to be aware that that may not have been universally true. This isn't something provable, and I'm not referring to any specific incident (certainly none referenced here), but there have been many things that mainstream white culture, for example, found funny but were humiliating or ugly to other people even at the time. So it's not quite as simple as "hey, we all thought it was fine back then, it's not fair to use modern standards for that."
Because Fox and conservatives think they are being canceled so when they see a liberal make a mistake they bring it to the forefront. That's why ABM posted this to begin with. If this was James Woods or some republican celeb there wouldn't be a peep. It's quite obvious what they're trying to do.
Shall we start listing rednecks who use the N word or did you just pick out the guy who takes Trump to task everyday as a liberal talk show host? Comedy has always been and always will be about as politically incorrect as any entertainment media could be.....The entire rat pack used the N word....Sinatra all the time...let's get that thread going eh? By the way....Kimmel apologized for his skit ….don't remember Dean Martin ever apologizing for his racist jokes with Sammy Davis Jr.....because , y'know....it was satire! Now we are revisiting that satire....wait until you hear who used insults like queer, fag, etc in the entertainment industry....that's a really long list too. It's going to be a huge task addressing white privilege moving forward from our current climate but I'm glad to see it happen
So, as far as I can tell, Kimmel hasn't been "cancelled" or whatever it is that conservatives have been wringing their hands over about things from the past coming back. He simply apologized for things he did that could very well be construed as racially insensitive. So, it seems like a positive outcome, a perfectly reasonable response. Why do we want that to end?
