For some of the long term veteran professionals, Im sure money and the monotony of playing/JOB takes a back seat. to what they deem as important in the now.

Well, I guess a point could be made that every NBA player values money over family. No man who really loved his family would choose an occupation that required him to be away from family so much. :)

    Eh,

There is a difference between choosing this career with an advanced knowledge of giving your time up in the winter and having time in the summer and having a last minute change. No one predicted this, and its unfair to hold players who chose this life to now just change or else, because of money.

It could also be said then that deep sea fishermen, Oil refinery workers, etc, all value money over family. Long haul Truckers.

    Wrong. They have time off.

6 months on, 6 months off. And its preplanned/

Some find that a better family situation than to work every week and have the weekends, type thing.

The Blazers haven’t been fighting and clawing to make the playoffs just so one of their key players could take off a month to visit with his son.

i wonder if there is intel on how the rest of the team feels about it?
Id bet they are fine with it considering the circumstances.

Well, actually it seems like that is exactly the situation the Blazers find themselves in, so yeah they did fight and claw to make the playoffs and yeah one of their key players is taking the rest of the season off. The good news is we have Zach who wouldn't have been back for several more games and a much healthier Nurk than we would have had. I think Ariza's situation very likely could have been a "this is the only time you get with your son and if you don't take it, who knows when you'll get to see him again" type of thing and if that were the case Ariza would be horrible not to show that he wants to be in his son's life. We would be better off if we had him but we don't and I don't blame him for that and I doubt his teammates do either.

    yeah right??

how many people slamming Ariza for this would also slam him in the aftermath when they realize Ariza had one chance to be a father in his sons life for the only timeframe he could
And denied the parenting responsibility for his money and to not let his team down?

how anyone would want him to choose money over being a good father in times like this, shows alot of the typical mentality aNd selfishness we all have.

reality is his choice will cost him 1.8 million in lost salary to be with his son..that's sacrifice..family first...and I blame no player for airing on the side of caution when it comes to moving to Florida for 7 weeks given the circumstance.....Ariza is also one of our older players....Melo hasn't fully resigned to playing yet either according to a recent interview..our oldest player...I wouldn't do it at all if I were faced with the choice. Many players may opt out by game time. As much as we want sports...it's actually really stupid to play out this season in my view.

The only things I know about this are that one article from yahoo sports called it a "custody battle" and Woj said it was "the mother's decision to grant a court-ordered, one-month visitation period during the league's quarantine of teams in Orlando, Florida". It doesn't sound too amicable and it really doesn't sound to me like Ariza actually even had much of a choice. From what I know of Ariza, I bet the guy would have played if he could have worked it out with his son's mother or a judge... or maybe even if he could have brought his son and a nanny in the bubble with him. Obviously that last sentence is conjecture but Ariza is a definite pro's pro who very badly wants to win. I think it's a reasonable assumption that his hand was forced here.

I think you're right that it's "stupid" for the league to play out the season because if this goes wrong in any meaningful way all of the positive cache that Adam Silver has built up with the players, the media and even the owners will be gone. Adam Silver will be the one that will be left holding the bag and looking stupid. For the players overall, they really aren't "stupid" as a union to do this. With the league having the opportunity to rip up the CBA due to the force majeure provision in the existing CBA the players need to look like they are doing everything they can to preserve good faith going into a likely renegotiation this off season. The league will have a decided advantage in those negotiations due to the uncertainty of the virus and their current business model's viability going forward. Also the league was given an extension through September to rip up the current CBA according to Woj.

So they most likely will do that ("terminate" the existing CBA) and in so doing take a huge upper hand over the players in upcoming negotiations. Thus it's in the best interest of the players, especially if this plays out in the media (which it most definitely will) to at least look like they were doing everything in their powers to help the league in its time of need.

The Florida spike in the virus is a non-issue, in my opinion. For starters, they’re going to be in a bubble with a select group of people, and everybody is going to be tested on a regular basis. But even more to the point, all the NBA players are young men in fantastic shape. If they get the virus they will have minor symptoms and less than zero chance of dying. So I don’t see how going to FL should be a concern for any of them.

Yep, but I also know how important depth and experience is in the playoffs, and Ariza gives us both of that. And we’re already missing Rodney Hood, who was supposed to be a key part of our championship run. Because of his absence it’s even more important that we have everybody else ready to go. And don’t forget, it was probably for his playoff experience that Olshey signed Ariza in the first place.

I couldn't disagree more but your opinion on this is the prevailing opinion around the league.....there's no knowledge that being young and athletic and getting this will not have lifelong repercussions....what I follow on BBC and Taiwan news streams contradicts the approach we're taking here....my view...until a vaccine we should not put them at risk period..that being said it's going to happen so I hope I'm wrong...Rudy Gobert is still sick 3 months later..just wait for a vaccine before spreading more of this...these players have elderly family members and children to when it's all over
