I agree with this. ———— I hear why you would change it, but it makes OT what it is. It’s like both teams earned that OT with good competition, so now you have to prove it by not fouling if you are over the limit.
I’ve had round table discussions about this. They give extra time outs in OT, so my idea is an extra foul in OT........UNLESS YOU’VE ALREADY FOULED OUT IN REGULATION.
OT really needs to be 4 periods of 1:15 each. And don't forget changing directions or the half-time show!.
players get an extra technical in overtime too! And a new coach’s challenge OT doesn’t mean it’s a new game..same rules should apply. Don’t foul out and screw your team
I've never liked the concept of fouling out at all. I think a different penalty should be levied if either a player or team (more so than already exists) fouls too much. I don't think it makes a more fun game to have players, especially stars, play fewer minutes. I also think it gives refereeing an outsize importance--I don't think referees explicitly favor some teams over others, but they're capable of making errors or unintentionally favoring a team over the course of a given game. While that would still hurt a team, it would have less impact if it didn't potentially mean the loss of one of your best players. Not that I think this is going to change, but I don't think the concept of fouling out is a good one.
Also the refs sometimes bend over backwards NOT to foul-out a star so he gets away with some. I still like the rule though - puts an upper limit on nonsense situational fouling.
That's why you could levy harsher penalties on too much fouling by a team. Situational fouling is usually not done by the star/better players anyway, so I feel like the "bonus" and "intentional foul" rules are already the attempted remedy for that.
