I'm going to call bullshit on that until/unless I learn more

my guess right now is that the owners of the drive-in are trying to make a point, a right-leaning point, and are using that movie to make it in an absurd fashion. I want to see the actual letters from people registering complaints about that specific movie.

in other words, I'm thinking it's joke protest and commentary. It is pretty funny though. And don't forget, a cop ran down a grandmother with a car in that movie too! But yeah, the gullible will eat it up

Seattle's first black female police chief RESIGNS hours after city council voted to defund the police and cut 100 cops from the force
    • Police Chief Carmen Best announced her resignation
    • Came after Seattle City Council voted Monday to reduce the force by as many as 100 cops
    • The city has about 1,400 police officers and reductions fell far short of the 50 per cent cut to department that many BLM protesters are seeking
    • City Council also had cut Best's roughly $285,000 annual salary
    • Best and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan strongly opposed the proposals
    • Durkan and Best urged council to slow down discussions about police budgets, saying issue could be taken up in earnest when 2021 city budget is considered
    • Best will step down September 2 and Adrian Diaz will step in as interim chief

Her salary was cut by $100,000.00.
She worked for that police department for 27 years so my guess is that she gets to retire with a pretty hefty retirement pension and benefits.
They're going to have trouble getting someone with her qualifications now.

My buddy lives in Seattle and he's really bothered by the urge for certain politicians in that town to basically defund the police. And he's a devout democrat.
He predicts more business's will move out of the city little by little?

I hope this conduct and belief doesn't hurt the positive effect of BLM protest?
Looting should not be condoned by any movement, imo.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Sounds like the council did slow things down, cutting only a very small portion of the police department for now.

it's an age old problem. The pendulum of change swings back and forth too wildly

I think most people would agree that generally, for a variety of reasons, police departments have accumulated too much power while insulating themselves from accountability. Reasonable reform movements kept butting up against the thick blue line of immunity and opposition of militant police unions, completely unwilling to engage in reasonable compromise. The situation was only getting worse while the list of minority victims of police misconduct grew larger and larger

frustration in minority communities has been growing for decades. Finally, there was enough motivation for change in communities that had spread outside of the minorities. And the resistance by police unions and those against change was even stronger and more militant. There was no spirit of compromise. It was just a big blue fuck you. Thus, about the only avenue of leverage those communities have is the leverage of the budget. Unfortunately, that's not a scalpel, it's an axe....and those cuts ain't pretty

but blaming those wanting to "defund" is pointing the finger in the wrong direction. The police are supposed to serve their communities. But for too many police departments, especially big city departments, the police stand against communities instead of with them. If a city like Seattle can't get the police union to compromise even a little, and from what I've read, the police have been obstinate...what is left for them to try?

Im not a huge government or Union guy and like for government organizations/agencies to be financed within reason and accountable.
If they can perform the same job and keep a handle on crime for a lower cost to tax payers Im all for it.
On the other hand if crime goes through the roof like NYC and there is no effective force to continue it, what you going to do? call ghost busters.

I don't know what type of structure, responsibility, or response pattern any of these new PD's will have. Need to see them function for a while first, and see how adaptable they are

but then if you can set the stark option of having to call ghost-busters, I could set the alternative of having a George Floyd and Breonna Taylor die from police misconduct 4 or 5 times every year. That's sure been what has been happening. But does it really need to come down to one of those extremes?....because we know damn well that Floyd and Taylor died under the current systems.

Are you painting a picture of the general character of the protestors by this one character?

Who are they? Did you poll them? This is certainly not any sort of credible reporting.
