Re: I'm NBA-Retarded -- Explain to me why... Yi Jianlian had to go to the draft and then throw a hissy fit when Milwaukee drafted him... Why couldn't he go immediately to the free market and decide who he signs a contract with?

No other NBA team can sign him as long as the Bucks keep his rights. Once they let go of those draft rights, Yi is a free agent.
Re: I'm NBA-Retarded -- Explain to me why... So basically to become a free agent and sign with a team of your own accord you have to enter your name in a draft and not be drafted?

A lot of overseas players just forego the draft and enter free agency, such as Arvydas Macijauskas and Garbajosa and Calderon.
Re: I'm NBA-Retarded -- Explain to me why... I agree in the sense that it is retarded, but I think it is important that the draft is done like that. It's really a catch-22 when you get a lame-o like Jianlian who wets his diaper when he doesn't get drafted by the team he wanted. :cry2:
Re: I'm NBA-Retarded -- Explain to me why... If Yi Jinlian was smart, he would have never entered the draft. That way he would have been able to control what team he played for. The only problem with that is that I think there is a cap on the amount he could earn under a contract that way... he wouldn't make nearly the money he will on the rookie scale (I'm not exactly sure if that's right though...)
