The post I replied to cited playoff winning percentage as the critieria for not extended someone in the organization so I was simply asking if that criteria applied to anyone else.

Dame, whom I'm thrilled will be here much longer, also could have bullet points of areas where he's failed or has been subpar. To me, that is not criteria enough for him to not be extended. I'm glad that you don't think Dame's career playoff winning percentage is a criteria you feel is valuable to determine his worthiness of staying in Portland.

Yes, this 100%! The coach should not get much credit for wins or losses. What's a head scratcher to me is there are so many people that think a coach has such a big impact on losses, but virtually no impact on wins. If that were the case, NBA teams would have no coaches because their value would only be negative.

Pay attention. The post was referring to Terry fucking Stotts, not some random coach. The top tier coaches in this league do help their teams win more but Terry Stotts is not one of them. So, yes, he can have zero impact on the offense (because they play so much iso ball and PnR which any high school coach can teach), and be a net negative on defense because he doesn’t hold players accountable for effort on that end nor does he have a defensive system to game plan for something as simple as a trap after six consecutive postseasons of seeing it. The man is a moron plain and simple.

    Interesting.

I haven't been here long and I have already seen multiple posts giving very specific arguments why the poster thinks Stotts is doing a poor job of managing the team. The counter argument seems to be that it just doesn't matter, that coaching is unimportant, etc.

It seems like you have 2 groups who aren't watching the same sport! It's like flat earth v sphere earth - there is literally no common ground for discussion.

It doesn't matter whether the Earth is flat or round. The shape of a planet is overrated. It's the creatures who give the planet gravity, not the planet's shape. Stop blaming flat planets and just replace the creatures.

As a new poster, you now get to listen to fucking retards repeat this bullshit for 8 years.

Got it. The criteria is only used on the Blazers coach, not other coaches.

Appreciate your advice. If you're looking for someone to getting in a name calling battle, I'm not you're guy. I'm here to talk hoops with people who may or may not have differing points of view. No basketball disagreement will cause me to have a temper tantrum.

What's funny is he's agreeing with the post saying coaches get too much blame for losses and not enough credit for wins, but when me and @hoopsjock sung Stotts praises for what he did in game 1, he was downplaying it! Then he'll act like we never give Stotts enough credit.

    Its very confusing.

I dont think Sotts is one of the best coaches, but I dont think he's one of the worst either. He had that LMA team as a dark horse contender before Wes injury and that was a great accomplishment. The most important quality of a coach is that players buy in and I feel Stotts has always had that. If he loses buy in as Nate McMillian did he needs to go.

I think 95% of the Blazers failures the last 5 years are from the roster. That said 29 of 30 teams fail every year. The Blazers have had some successes even if I'd hope for more.

So I guess I sort of disagree with the question of this thread. My answer would be; it doesn't matter.

If we needed a more exact answer I'd probably say when Dame stops insisting on having Stotts as his coach.

To answer the question in the title.

"Hello this it Greg Popovich. I would like to speak to Neil Olshey.....

Hi Neil? Hey i was thinking i'd like to coach up there by my winery. Any chance you might be able to find me a job?"

Ummm okay, so in your world there’s only one coach in the world capable of replacing Terry Stotts? Also, interestingly it also highlights where you place Stotts in your hierarchy of elite coaches. Good to know where you stand. SMH.

When one of Jody Allen, Neil Olshey or Damian Lillard decide to send him into the sunset. Not holding my breath.

If I said I feel many on here vastly overrate coaching, then why would it be confusing if I thought prasing Stotts in Game 1 was not warrented? My logic holds true in both directions. I feel like you give Stotts too much credit for losses and I guess in Game 1, you gave him too much credit for the win. That seems pretty consistent with my narrative the coaching doesn't have that great of an impact.

Explain how that is confusing to you.

I never said he did. Though in my opinion he was in violation of 3 of the forum rules, if you want to get technical. I do appreciate you coming to his aid, that is very kind of you.

What post are you referencing to anyway?

Greg Popovich apparently is the only one?
Brad Stevens has a few admirers and i guess Nick Nurse is the flavor of the month.
