actually being disgusted by the idea that two different ethnic groups have sex is racist in so many ways...otherwise it's just a search term for those so inclined. But you knew that!
Beautiful house, but $1 million+? Damn! Hell no. You can get much more bang for your buck in other areas around Portland & not have to deal with the BS that comes with living in Portland.
4th generation in this here neighborhood. TONS of friends and family, great restaurants, breweries, art galleries and shops within a few blocks of us. Great school district. Walking distance to both sets of grandparents. No freeway driving whatsoever. I damn sure know I could get a damn mansion out in the suburbs, but that's just not our style. Can't do strip malls. No BS here homie.
We moved last year from montavilla over to South tabor and had the same thing. We can go out to happy valley for what we're paying and get a pretty nice house, just a personal preference thing though. I've never liked the feeling of neighborhoods like that, subdivision type spots. And some people love them, and thats great too. Just not my thing. I love walking and biking places, and avoiding larger streets as much as possible.
I was born and raised in inner Southeast Portland and lived there until we moved to the ‘burbs in order to cut my commute in half. I had a serious resentment for years about having to leave Portland (we left when housing prices in the suburbs were noticeably higher than they were in Portland). We spend (or did pre-Covid) a great deal of time in the city because that’s where all the decent restaurants are. But after 35 years in suburbia there is no way in hell I would ever move back to Portland. Besides the bizarre politics (if they can be called that) the city that I grew up in is filthy, congested and overrun by the homeless. Housing prices are unconscionable. The city has purposely made getting in and out of the city proper exceedingly difficult (SE Foster anyone??) and they have deliberately made parking spaces an endangered species. All to force residents (and visitors) out of their cars while having a transit system that works for no one. All these years later I love coming home to a small city that is clean, well governed and has above average amenities and services (despite a recent population explosion), with a location that allows me to get out of the metro area within minutes. I know change is inevitable but I sure do miss the Portland I grew up in.
We pay 0.86% but have great government services including a fire department that has already saved my life. They got here in less than ten minutes and gave me a life saving IV. Also, out police department is second to none, I won't even get into our other great services. People are different here. You dont see garbage on the roadside. You've got a lake and a major river near by as well as one of the most beautiful scenic areas in Tryon Creek state park where my grandmother once caught a 3 lb. steelhead in a knee deep pond in the creek. They have a few parks all of which are beautiful. We've had deer grazing in our yard and we sometimes have to avoid them when driving somewhere in the early morning or in the evening just after sunset. We have tremendous schools and in the five years that I've lived here there has been no crime at all in our neighborhood. Perhaps best of all, no barking dogs anywhere to be heard. No vandalism. People drive more carefully. On the negative side is higher taxes nearly twice that rate. You gets what you pays for.
Ridiculously priced homes, high property tax, poorly funded schools... I use to think that was my thing. Then I moved about 15 minutes away, things are more practical. Life isn’t much different. I like visiting and working over there is okay. But honestly I don’t miss it much.
I like your neighborhood a lot. Just like I like my neighborhood (Overlook). I could get down with some sort of huge lot out of town, I guess, but I love the city, love the east side (love the forests on the west side). That being said. I am tired of thinking how clean it once was... I used to walk with my kids up Skidmore to Mississippi for some Thai food, or down to Lovely Fifty Fifty or to Por Que No--and I still do, or did before covid--and the kids could walk ahead and it was nice, and now crossing over the freeway, there might be cars on the greenspace or people shooting junk or for like 6 months there was this topless lady that sat in the open doorway of her tent just looking out, and so much trash everywhere. I run (often at night) and sometimes it is downright nerve-racking traversing the pedestrian bridges... We need some social programs working overtime in this town. The divide between the haves and have-nots is getting crazy.
Its what people in the city are saying you are missing. But you can just hop in the car and go anywhere. I do get what HCP says about location, but in LA, its a lot more important than Portland.
Thing is, I’d rather live in the inner city and be able to walk to things. It’s a real neighborhood vibe. I don’t like strip malls, just can’t do it. Where the bank looks like the Panda Express that looks like the dog groomers that looks like the dry cleaners. With a big parking lot in front. May not be even be something people even think of, but I don’t want to be surrounded by thousands of cookie cutter houses. To each his own. I like the character AND diversity of our 100 year old houses and people in my hood.
Yeah, but a big fucking plush house with a nice view is good too. Especially with COVID where everyone is kinda self-isolating and shit. City life is losing the luster, shit, there's a Du's in Beaverton yo. People are fleeing Manhattan. People are fleeing SF. You think you live in a city, but its not, its just a normal neighborhood. I mean, its your neighborhood and you grew up there and its a dope community feel, but as gentrification happens and immigrants move out to the burbs, places like Beaverton will have dope Chinese and Mexican food. The allure of the city life is dying. Great food can be had anywhere. Culture is online now. You can buy anything you need, no need to find that "dope spot on the block" to get kicks anymore. Confirmed and SNKRs app. More and more homeless people will start taking over your sidewalks. Crackhead nation will return.
