So many studies show the people that are often elite at doing something are below average at teaching/managing others to do that same thing.
He cant be any worse than the defensive system they currently....use? That sounds like the correct word.
That's an interesting point. OTOH, there is no salary cap for coaches and nothing for the team to lose. It isn't like they will be firing some whizz-bang defensive coach to make room for him!
Agreed there is no salary cap from the NBA. Almost certainly there is a budget from Jody Allen. I'm not strongly against taking a risk on an unproven assistant coach. Which one would you want to get rid of to make room for GP?
Not so long ago Gary said he couldn't play in today's game because they don't let you play physical defense.....that hasn't changed...also, if you've ever heard Payton talk...he's tough to understand in a quiet room let alone on the sidelines of a game...he talks like James Brown talks..I'd rather hire Chauncey Billups to coach defense with Stotts
Go out on a limb... I'd never be able to say anything if I waited to speak on things I'm qualifid to answer! New ideas and (civil) disagreements make a great message board.

That's an interesting point. Even if he were able to share the tips/tricks from his defensive success, many of those things are illegal now.
I'm not going to knock Stoudamire and I would prefer him or Payton. Having said that, recruiting is a HUGE part in college coaching success. I would suspect, being a former NBA player helps Stoudamire recruit. I'd like to see him move up to a major conference team before I'd consider anything but a lower level assistant job.
OK, I will show my ignorance here. Do the Blazers have an assistant specifically designated as "development coach"?
yeah i think he's working his way up, the proper way. although he was an assistant at memphis grizz initially, i think he realised he needs to know more and started lower to achieve that. recruiting is a good part of it, but its also a factor where people go where winners go.... many many top tier examples of that, the record is improving, its good to watch a decent post-nba career in the making.
I don't know if the voice is a good excuse not to give him a chance... Doc Rivers? Obviously if we could get Chauncey that would be preferable but he is already coaching in the league.
