Quarterback Grant Wells grew up knowing the story of Marshall football. The 1970 plane crash. The university’s decision to continue playing. The winning years that eventually would come.

And the importance of representing the school and honoring the fallen on the crash’s big anniversary.

The redshirt freshman threw a season-high five touchdown passes and No. 16 Marshall commemorated the 50th anniversary of the worst disaster in U.S. sports history with a 42-14 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday.

Rice uses 5 interceptions to upset No. 15 Marshall 20-0

    Huntington, W.Va

Rice was offended when Marshall’s offense stayed on the field on fourth down inside the Owls’ 30-yard line on the first series of the game.

The Rice defense held — and took its frustrations out on the Thundering Herd the rest of the game.

Safety Naeem Smith returned one of five Marshall interceptions for a touchdown and Rice shocked the 15th-ranked Thundering Herd 20-0 on Saturday for their first loss.

No. 15 UTSA's perfect season ends in blowout at North Texas

An undefeated season slipped away from No. 15 UTSA on a rain-soaked Saturday in the Dallas area.

The Roadrunners didn't seem terribly surprised.

Whether it was losing three fumbles early with a slick ball or playing a hot opponent a week after staying perfect on a last-second touchdown, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor sensed the odds getting worse.

North Texas backs DeAndre Torrey and Ikaika Ragsdale combined for five touchdowns while UTSA quarterback Frank Harris had two turnovers and didn't play after halftime in the Mean Green's 45-23 rout of the Roadrunners.

For Middle Tennessee State, big plays brought the biggest win in program history.

And for Miami, there are big problems.

Chase Cunningham passed for 408 yards and three touchdowns, including a 98-yarder to DJ England-Chisholm, and Middle Tennessee State stunned No. 25 Miami 45-31 for its first win in 21 tries against ranked opponents.
