Free Agent Derrick Jones to Portland

How does this guy rebound in comparison to other wings?

 

I'm fine with adding Jones to the roster.

Its using the full 9 mil MLE, the resulting hardcap, losing the ability to take a contract back in a Whiteside sign and trade, then giving jones a player option on year two so if he is good we lose him if he suck we are stuck with him.

Jones was projected to earn under 5 million and we gave him 19.

Same logic as giving Turner 70 million.

Obviously glad olshey didn't have another 50million to screw up with.

Lakers get Harrell and we get Jones who played less than Meyers fucking Leonard.

 

After seeing some of these deals, I don't know if that's true.

Robin Lopez got "just under the MLE".

Robin freaking Lopez.

Even if there isn't a lot of teams with capspace this offseason, there also aren't a lot of good players, which means everyone else who only has the MLE are all fighting for the same guys.

 

Nice to have another player who will drive to the basket and finish. Besides Dame, we have been missing that the last few years.

 

I'm happy that we're at least starting to address the horrific defense of this team. There's only so much we can do unless we trade CJ in my opinion. It would be cool to see CJ moved now. Things would make sense a bit more. I'm pretty excited for Derrick Jones Jr. now. It might also signal that Stotts is willing to change up his offense a bit more from last season. Here's hoping.

 

About the same size as Little, not as long of a wingspan, and probably not even as good of a shooter.

Color me a bit skeptical.

He’s basically harkless with a lot more athleticism. Harkless couldnt hit from the outside either but he improved a bit in Portland. I know that’s not going to wow anyone but he has a lot of potential. He can defend right away too

 

well they had Jimmy/Iggy/and prolly Crowder already on the wings.

 

With that 2nd unit if I was Stotts they should be pushing the ball.

They tried to keep him but lowballed him...

 

He and Covington are pretty disruptive in the passing lanes. I like going after defense rather than having to get incredible production from the backcourt to squeak out wins.

 

It’s been awhile since we had a good garbage man on this roster. Someone who runs the floor, gets the loose balls, cleans up the glass. If he’s that with plus D and upside then it’s fine. We would all prefer the better player but as someone mentioned I doubt he’s on the floor in crunch time. I HIGHLY doubt Ibaka(like the rest of the PFs we wanted) were/are in our price range. I do wish the second year was a team option however.

Woulda rather signed him

 

I'll bet he shoots it better than that working with our staff after a few months....probably get it up around 35...most shooters improve from deep working with the Blazers

 

We had this dude at one point. Lower upside than the DJJ signing though.

 

1) paying for young and healthy. 5 mil was foolishness.
2) even if you do take the projected 5 mil, you need to compare that the coming year salary of 9 mil, not the 2 year.
3) Portland pays a premium since it’s small market and not a hot spot.
4) fits a need. Dame/CJ aren’t good on D but need to have energy come Dame-Time. Being able to throw multiple defensive wings out there will preserve the abilities of our true star.

I don’t think Whiteside was ever being traded. He doesn’t have the value and is better coming off the books. Save money that way and spend the MLE. There’s only so many players we can have and even few who can get minutes. Only real need left is PG backup.

 

I've warmed up to this, we definitely need the defense. And I'm looking forward to having a slam-dunk champion to watch. Haven't had one of those since we lost Evan Turner.
