Fields throws 5 TDs passes, No. 3 Ohio State beats Rutgers

first half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, in
    Columbus, Ohio

Justin Fields threw five touchdown passes, and No. 3 Ohio State won a Big Ten game on Saturday night. But it was hard to tell from the postgame demeanor of coach Ryan Day and some of his players.

The Buckeyes charged out to a 35-3 halftime lead over Rutgers, a five-touchdown underdog. But mistakes, sloppiness and a few trick plays allowed the Scarlet Knights to put up 24 second-half points and get a little too close for Day’s comfort. Ohio State (3-0 Big Ten) won 49-27, but things didn’t go as well as planned.

Maryland gets first win against Penn State in 5 years, 35-19

running back Jake Funk (34) against Penn State in the first quarter of an NCAA
college football game in State College, Pa., Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020

Maryland coach Mike Locksley grew up rooting for the team he now coaches, so he’s intimately aware of all the beatings the Terps have taken year after year from Penn State.

Knowing that makes performances like the one Taulia Tagovailoa and the Terps turned in during their 35-19 win over regional rival Penn State on Saturday all that more special.

After the postgame party was over, after Indiana fans chanted “We want Bama!” and coach Tom Allen went crowd-surfing in the Hoosiers’ locker room once again, Michael Penix Jr. started looking ahead.

Penix and company want more — much more.

Penix passed for 342 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, and No. 13 Indiana beat No. 23 Michigan 38-21 on Saturday for its first victory against the Wolverines in 33 years.

Penn State running back Journey Brown says he has a heart condition that is forcing him to give up football.

Brown posted Wednesday night on Twitter that he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes heart muscle to become abnormally thick and can make it more difficult to pump blood.

Penn State coach James Franklin told reporters Brown’s condition was not COVID-19 related, but it was discovered in September during “a routine COVID test.”

    “It’s heartbreaking,” Franklin told reporters.

For Ty Fryfogle and No. 10 Indiana, each game brings something new to be excited about.

Fryfogle had 11 catches for 200 yards — surpassing career highs he’d set just a week earlier — and the Hoosiers handled Michigan State 24-0 on Saturday. Indiana remained unbeaten, turning what looked like a potential trap game into an easy win.

Northwestern players celebrate after they defeated Wisconsin 17-7 in an NCAA
college football game in Evanston, Ill., Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020

Every clutch play by Peyton Ramsey. Every big hit by Northwestern’s defense. It was all designed to send a message.

The Wildcats had something they wanted to say.

“We woke up the country now, and we need our damn respect,” cornerback Greg Newsome II said.

Ramsey threw two touchdown passes and No. 19 Northwestern shut down Graham Mertz and No. 10 Wisconsin for a 17-7 victory on Saturday that put the undefeated Wildcats in control of the Big Ten West.

No. 3 Ohio State beats back comeback bid by No. 9 Indiana

Ohio State receiver Garrett Wilson celebrates his touchdown against Indiana during the first half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, in Columbus, Ohio.

After climbing to its highest AP Top 25 poll ranking in more than a half century, No. 9 Indiana got a chance find out how it measured up with Big Ten behemoth Ohio State, a team the Hoosiers hadn’t beaten in 32 years.

They came up short but sure made it interesting — and a lot closer than the No. 3 Buckeyes would have liked.

Behind quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Indiana (4-1) rallied from a four-touchdown deficit in the second half only to be outlasted by the Buckeyes 42-35 on a rainy Saturday in an all-but-empty Ohio Stadium.

Indiana made sure the loss of its star quarterback didn't interfere with its emergence as one of the Big Ten’s top teams this season.

These Hoosiers play some pretty stout defense, too

Jack Tuttle threw two touchdown passes in his first career start and Indiana’s defense made a stand in the final minute as the 10th-ranked Hoosiers outlasted No. 18 Wisconsin 14-6 on Saturday. Tuttle was starting in place of Michael Penix Jr., who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a victory at Maryland last week.

Porter leads way as No. 15 Northwestern runs over Illinois

Northwestern was at the bottom of the Big Ten West a year ago, a collapse the Wildcats didn’t see coming after winning the division in 2018.

It didn’t take them long to get back on top. Now that they’re finished with the regular season, they can turn their attention toward No. 3 Ohio State and the conference championship game.

Cam Porter ran for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns, Evan Hull added a season-best 149 yards on the ground, and No. 15 Northwestern tuned up for the Buckeyes by beating Illinois 28-10 on Saturday.

No. 3 Ohio St. runs past No. 15 Wildcats for Big Ten crown

Ohio State running back Trey Sermon got the message Saturday.

He'd heard coach Ryan Day preach about everything the Buckeyes overcame to reach this season's Big Ten championship game. He also heard Day urging players to overcome more obstacles in the second half.

So Sermon delivered — with a record-breaking performance.

He ran for 331 yards and scored two second-half touchdowns, helping No. 3 Ohio State rally past No. 15 Northwestern 22-10 for its fourth straight conference crown and a likely spot in the College Football Playoff.

No. 14 Northwestern beat Auburn 35-19 to claim the Citrus Bowl and pick up its fourth bowl victory in the last five seasons on Saturday in Orlando.
