Culver leads No. 15 West Virginia past Western Kentucky

West Virginia forward Derek Culver (1) shoots over a Western Kentucky
defender during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Friday, Nov.
    27, 2020, in SIoux Falls, S.D.

West Virginia rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit against Western Kentucky and had to hold off a frenzied rally down the stretch to win the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic.

The 15th-ranked Mountaineers (3-0) led 66-57 with just under three minutes to play before Western Kentucky (2-1) cut it to four in the final minute. It looked like the Hilltoppers would get the ball back, down four, after a scramble for a rebound out of bounds was given to Western Kentucky. The call was reversed after a replay review and West Virginia made free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

    Vegas.

Baylor’ hadn’t been on a basketball court for a game in 266 days, until Saturday night.

And it showed — for a moment.

The Bears shook off a sluggish start to the season, MaCio Teague scored 21 points and No. 2 Baylor won its delayed season opener 112-82 over Louisiana-Lafayette.

Ramey, No. 17 Texas beat Davidson 78-76 in Maui Invitational

Texas guard Courtney Ramey (3) drives the ball to the basket for
the winning score in the second half of an NCAA college
basketball game against Davidson in the Maui Invitational tournament, Monday,
    Nov. 30, 2020 in Asheville, N.C. Texas won 78-76.

Courtney Ramey and No. 17 Texas offered a glimpse Monday of the Longhorns’ potential depth to start the relocated Maui Invitational. Coach Shaka Smart wants to see the defense look a little sharper, too.

Ramey hit the go-ahead driving score with 20 seconds left and the Longhorns survived a pair of final-possession Davidson shots for the win to beat the Wildcats 78-76 in Monday’s tournament opener.

Wilson’s second-half surge lifts Kansas to 65-62 victory over Kentucky

    upload_2020-12-2_20-6-10.png

Kansas forward Jalen Wilson waited a whole year for a night like Tuesday.

His celebration came in almost total silence.

Wilson scored 21 of his career-high 23 points in the second half, made the first two 3-pointers of his career during the key stretch and posted his first double-double to help No. 7 Kansas get past No. 20 Kentucky 65-62 in the Champions Classic.

Unbearable: No. 2 Baylor Outclasses No. 5 Illinois 82-69

Before this season started, Illinois junior guard Ayo Dosunmu tried to whoever would listen that this Illinois team hasn’t done anything yet to warrant the preseason hype.

Wednesday night’s result against the second-ranked team in the nation proved the preseason All-American was exactly right in his assessment.

In its first major challenge of the 2020-21 season, No. 5 Illinois got poor performances out of most of its star power and couldn’t recover from Baylor’s second-half push to leave Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis with anything other than a 82-69 loss.

Coleman, No. 17 Texas beat No. 14 UNC 69-67 for Maui title

It wasn’t long after Texas arrived for the relocated Maui Invitational that coach Shaka Smart pointed out the banners hanging above the court to recognize the tournament’s past champions.

“We said: ‘There’s no Texas on these banners,’” Smart said.

There will be now, thanks to Matt Coleman III’s clock-beating shot and a defensive effort that carried the 17th-ranked Longhorns to their first title.

Coleman hit a stepback jumper with 0.1 seconds left to help Texas beat No. 14 North Carolina 69-67 in Wednesday's final, capping a wild finish that saw the Longhorns regroup after blowing a 16-point lead and falling behind late.

No. 17 Texas Tech Rolls Past Troy 80-46 In Replacement Game

Texas Tech's Nimari Burnett (25) blocks the shot by Troy's Kieffer Punter (0) during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, in Lubbock, Texas.

Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said it wasn't a scramble to find Troy as a replacement opponent in a matter of days when both schools had games called off because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beard saw plenty of value in getting the game in rather than simply moving on to the next one on the schedule, which comes quickly for both teams.

Mac McClung scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half for the 17th-ranked Red Raiders, who led big early and beat Troy 80-46 on Friday night.

No. 17 Texas Tech pulls away for 81-40 win over Grambling St
    [IMG]
Kyler Edwards played in a national championship game as a freshman for No. 17 Texas Tech, started every game last season and now wants to be one of the best junior guards in the country.

“I’m right there with him. I want him to be in that category. I believe he can be, I believe he will be,” coach Chris Beard said. “He has the work ethic and talent to do it, but the stat sheet has to show iton a consistent basis.”

Edwards had his first double-double at Texas Tech with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and the Red Raiders overcame a sluggish start to pull away for an 81-40 win over Grambling State on Sunday.

Agbaji scores 18 to lead No. 5 Kansas to 95-50 rout of Omaha

Ochai Agbaji and Mitch Lightfoot were held without a field goal and combined for two points when fifth-ranked Kansas needed a late 3-pointer and a missed free throw by Creighton to escape with a win earlier this week.

The pair made up for it against Omaha.

Agbaji hit four 3s and scored 18 points, Lightfoot came off the bench to score a career-best 14 points with seven rebounds, and the Jayhawks cruised to a 95-50 win Friday night in their final tune-up before beginning Big 12 play.

No. 11 West Virginia rallies, escapes North Texas 62-50

celebrate after Sherman scores during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game
against North Texas Friday, Dec. 11, 2020, in Morgantown, W.Va.

The uncertainty of playing amid a pandemic is weighing on West Virginia, to the point where the 11th-ranked Mountaineers trailed at halftime to unheralded North Texas and coach Bob Huggins had to light a fire under his team.

The Mountaineers responded, rallying with 18 straight points to open the second half, and fought off a late run by North Texas to win their home opener 62-50 on Friday.

Ramey, Brown lead No. 11 Texas past Sam Houston State 79-63

Texas guard Courtney Ramey doesn't always use proper technique when he shoots.

“He's a maverick,” coach Shaka Smart said. “He's not gonna always do everything exactly by the textbook.”

Ramey, a junior, has done better with that this season than last. He scored 17 points, including 5-of-7 shooting on 3-pointers, as No. 11 Texas defeated Sam Houston State 79-63 Wednesday night.

No. 5 Kansas wins 30th straight league opener at Texas Tech

Ochai Agbaji got wide open again to take an inbound pass and made the go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left to extend a three-decade streak for No. 5 Kansas.
Agbaji finished with 23 points, the last coming after the inbound pass from Marcus Garrett, in a 58-57 win over No. 14 Texas Tech on Thursday night, giving the Jayhawks a victory in their conference opener for the 30th season in a row.

Miles McBride found a way to steer No. 8 West Virginia through a slippery stretch when Iowa State was disrupting the Mountaineers’ offense.

McBride scored 18 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 21 seconds left, to lift the Mountaineers to a 70-65 victory over the Cyclones on Friday night.
