    Phil Niekro, who rode his knuckleball to 318 wins and a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame, has died at 81 of cancer. The Hall said in an announcement Sunday that Niekro died overnight.

    Niekro's signature pitch confounded major league hitters and led to 3,342 strikeouts, ranking 11th overall.

    “Phil Niekro’s knuckleball is like a butterfly with hiccups," Hall of Fame hitter Willie Stargell once said.
