No. 5 Villanova blasts Marquette 85-68 for 6th straight win

Collin Gillespie's accuracy and Villanova's efficiency assured that the Wildcats wouldn't join the list of Marquette's highly-ranked victims.

Gillespie scored 22 points and sank six 3-pointers as No. 5 Villanova routed Marquette 85-68 for its sixth consecutive victory Wednesday night.

No. 7 Creighton routs Seton Hall 89-53, Jefferson scores 19

Creighton came into its game against Seton Hall off three wins by a total of nine points, and the history between the teams suggested another close contest Wednesday night.

It turned out this one wasn't even close.

Damien Jefferson scored 16 of his season-high 19 points in the first half and No. 7 Creighton jumped out to a fast start on its way to an 89-53 victory over the Pirates.

No. 25 UConn cracks Top 25, squeezes past DePaul 60-53

UConn returned to the Top 25 for the first time in more than four years, then immediately got all it could handle from a struggling DePaul squad.

The close score aside, the Huskies made a big statement Monday about the direction of the program.

Tyrese Martin scored 18 points and 25th-ranked Connecticut beat DePaul 60-53 without leading scorer James Bouknight for its fourth straight victory.

Butler erases 13-point deficit, upsets No. 8 Creighton in OT

Butler coach LaVall Jordan challenged Aaron Thompson on Saturday. The senior guard responded just as Jordan envisioned.

Thompson scored 17 points, found Bryce Nze for the go-ahead layup with 68 seconds left in overtime, and played shutdown defense late to help the Bulldogs overcome a 13-point deficit and upset No. 8 Creighton 70-66.

No. 3 Villanova edges Seton Hall in return from 27-day break

Stuck in medical isolation, Villanova filled its schedule with YouTube videos, FaceTime calls and video games to stay connected. The Wildcats had to create their own entertainment with basketball on pause.

"It's hard when you're in a hotel room watching everybody else play," guard Collin Gillespie said.

With a lengthy layoff over, the Wildcats could finally enjoy their own highlight reel.

Cole Swider hit the winning free throw with 1.9 seconds left and Gillespie scored 22 points to help No. 3 Villanova win its first game in 27 days, 76-74 over Seton Hall on Tuesday night.

Gillespie, Moore lead No. 3 Villanova past Providence 71-56

A bright light coming from a sunny window delayed the start of the second half. When the game finally resumed, Villanova's offense shone on the court — neither a dark curtain nor Providence could blot out the Wildcats.

Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore scored 15 points apiece, and No. 3 Villanova used a dominating final 20 minutes to defeat Providence 71-56 on Saturday.

Ballock scores 29 points, No. 17 Creighton beats Seton Hall

All No. 17 Creighton needed to beat Seton Hall was Mitch Ballock's biggest game of the season and a rarely used or practiced zone defense that allowed the Bluejays to overcome their biggest deficit in a win since 2014.

Ballock hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 41 seconds to play to cap a season-high 29-point performance and Creighton overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to beat Seton Hall 85-81 on Wednesday night.

Georgetown followed up what had been its biggest win of the season with an even bigger one.

Jahvon Blair scored 22 points to lead four Hoyas in double figures, and Georgetown used its best shooting in weeks to build a quick lead and beat No. 15 Creighton 86-79 on Wednesday night.

St. John's shuts down No. 3 Villanova in 70-59 upset

St. John'sVince Cole, left, drives against Villanova's Caleb Daniels during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021, in New York.

Freshman guard Posh Alexander and his pumped-up teammates doused Mike Anderson with water after their biggest win yet under the second-year St. John's coach.

Just outside Carnesecca Arena, students cheered so loudly from their dorms that jubilant players could hear them in the locker room.

It was that kind of night for the suddenly surging Red Storm.

“I let them see another side of me,” a smiling Anderson said.

Alexander scored 16 points and St. John's smothered No. 3 Villanova, upsetting the ice-cold Wildcats 70-59 on Wednesday to halt their nine-game winning streak.

Bishop leads No. 19 Creighton past cold-shooting Hoyas 63-48

Just last week, Georgetown dominated Creighton on the Bluejays' home court.

Creighton did the same to the Hoyas on Tuesday night.

Christian Bishop scored 17 points and the 19th-ranked Bluejays capitalized on Georgetown's worst shooting performance in a decade while rolling to a 63-48 win.
