The Wood trade was during free agency and only happened because of the original trade. There was no way to know that Wood could've been had for Ariza at that low of a salary or that Detroit wasn't going to re-sign him. It only worked for Houston because of the timing of when the trade officially went through. So you're kind of whining over something that wasn't really a realistic thing. If you wanna debate the value of the RoCo trade that's fine.

Houston got Ariza from Olshey, then traded Ariza for Christian Wood only 2 days later. All GMs knew that Wood was available for longer than 2 days, so it was no accident by Olshey. He misevaluated player talent as usual. He thought that Covington plus a no. 1 was worth more than Wood.

As I've noted for years, Olshey's weakness is forwards and centers. His strength is 2nd-round picks, but he trades away half of those picks. So he's useless.

    Wrong!

The original Houston and Detroit trade didn't include Wood as it was two days before Houston was even allowed to talk to him about free agency. See the Bucks trying to trade for a free agent (Bogdanovic) and getting penalized for tampering. The Wood part was worked into the trade only after Houston had come to terms during the moratorium.

The only reason the Bucks got into trouble and that trade didn't go through is that the Kings didn't consult Bogdan. If you think that the Pistons and then Houston didn't know what was going to happen when they started that transaction, I think you're putting your head in the sand. There is nontampering tampering that goes on all of the time. Like everyone including the Lakers knew that was where LeBron was going while he was supposedly entertaining the idea of other teams and if you think that LeBron's people never told the Lakers that (probably through an intermediary) then again I think you are being naive.

Tampering leading up to free agency is pretty much a given, how else do so many guys announce their intentions the moment the moratorium starts. You think they just negotiate that stuff that quickly? I'm not talking about when the contracts are actually aloud to be signed, I'm talking about the moment they are supposedly aloud to start negotiations Woj is dropping bombs about new contracts.

This is false, the league imposed way stricter tampering rules after the disaster that was June 30th, 2019. The Bucks got in trouble because Bogdan was a free agent and they shouldn't have been talking about a trade involving him, not because they didn't consult him. Besides who knew Detroit was going to let Christian Wood walk so they could sign Mason Plumlee? If Olshey was playing by the rules there is no way he would have been privy to that information.

And just about every sign-and-trade over the last two years has been because of a situation like this where there is a trade in place or two teams both want something from each other.

    This is true.

Rumors were that Houston was close to getting Wood to sign a 3-yr, $27M deal (for the full MLE amount)... but that other teams were still interested.
Wood's agent was able to use the leverage of 'other teams' to get a much larger 3-yr, $41M contract through a S&T.

If the Ariza trade with Detroit hadn't already been agreed to - Wood would have still likely ended up in Houston, just for a lot less money.

The Bucks weren't supposed to be the ones talking to Bogdan, it was the Kings that should have. He would have told them he didn't want to do that and no one would have been the wiser. I think it happens all of the time and you're pretty much saying that in the second post I'm quoting.

Yeah, the only thing the trade changed was that since it wasn't official until Sunday that Friday they were able to offer Wood more than the MLE because of it.

The Kings, much like the Bucks, weren't allowed to sign and trade or talk to him about it either, so no you're still wrong.

It DID happen all the time which is why the NBA imposed the new rules and tried to put an end to it. Olshey followed the rules. If the NBA found out Houston and Detroit talked about Wood on Wednesday they wouldn't have allowed Wood to go to Houston and vetoed the trade.

All this talk about we could have traded for Christian Wood. This would have never happened, he was a free agent and choose Houston and was going to end up there anyway, it just so happen to be done via sign and trade. Also if needed Houston could have dumped salary to make more room, so Detroit was best to get some pieces back just because.
