So, apparently Kyrie has suggested that Kobe Bryant be the new NBA logo and Jerry West has agreed?

I have no qualms with it being changed, but shouldn't it be Wilt Chamberlain if it's anyone? I'm kind of sick of the Kobe sanctification. I doubt Kobe even starts over West in the "All-Time Lakers" squad. But whatever - one upside would be it would no doubt piss Jordan off. He would "take that personally," only now he's too old and fat for it to matter.

    I would support this.

Let’s be honest — Jerry West played in an era where @Fez Forthright would average 20/10 as a 6’3” PF :bored:

If Jerry West was black, nobody would suggest this. Change my mind.

Problem is Kyrie came right out and made it a race issue.

    Change the Logo no problem.
Change it to a more known entity? No Problem either.

Change it because it is a white guy? Really?

On top of that why would the NBA choose a Rapist as the Logo? No way it should be Kobe. No Way.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
The vast majority of NBA fans (counting casual fans too, not just people who post on forums) probably don't even know that the logo is meant to be a silhouette of West. The balance and lines of that logo, though, are virtually perfect, so IMO it'd be stupid to change it just to honor a new player.

I agree with you in general. However, it's always bugged me that the NBA logo is a guy dribbling. Seems to me the most iconic, graceful and powerful move in basketball is the dunk. The most meaningful shot in the modern game is the three point jumper. Either of those seem more appropriate.

If 80% of a game's highlights are a dunk or a three pointer, why have a logo where a guy is dribbling?

If I were the NBA and looking to gain fans, I'd tell each team to design their own NBA logo based on their team's signature shot. Use that logo for the home team in-game. Fans would love it. The Kareem sky hook, the Dirk fadeaway and the Jordan dunk....I guess for Portland it would be Lillard taking a 3 or a Walton baseball pass off a rebound.

The Lakers can use it as an opportunity to masturbate over Kobe, which of course they will. Although the truth is Shaq's dunk or Kareem's skyhook are far more iconic than any particular Kobe move. Even Magic throwing a pass while in motion might be more fitting....

I'd feel kind of bad for Charlotte though. How do you make a logo out of that franchise?

I agree and I know this might be a conflict of interests but that's why the NBA logo should be the jump man. That's the most iconic silhouette in the game's history. I realize that it's the Jordan brand logo but Jordan also happens to be the best to ever do it. The free advertisement would also be the other NBA owners' way of telling MJ thank you for making them more than thirty billion dollars collectively.

You can't make it LeBron who is an active player and there really is no debate that the GOAT is either LeBron or MJ... also LeBron doesn't have the iconic logo and then there is the fact that the argument for LeBron being better than Mike is weak. Does LeBron have a song called "Be Like LeBron"? I didn't think so.

I have a problem with using Kobe.

There are so many players that they could choose from that weren't controversial. The guy did some highly questionable shit. By all appearances he was a great father and he really turned it around, but why choose someone that has a dark past? I would rather have LeBron over Kobe and I'm not even a LeBron fan. But he hasn't had even the smallest bit of controversy in his career. He's a great father. Etc etc etc.

But like I said in my earlier post, I highly doubt that this would even be a conversation if Jerry West was black.

I want a logo of Aminu dribbling off his foot. Wait, that brings us back to boring dribbling...

Seriously, the beauty of the NBA logo is its simplicity. No one would guess it's Jerry West if that wasn't common knowledge already. A great emblem can take on meaning beyond its basic shape. The car companies are some of the best examples. (And some of the worst examples. Hyundai can't understand why it struggles to gain market share despite great products and pricing, yet it rolls out an etch-a-sketch emblem.) If you try to build too much specific detail into it, it's usually a failure.

It's clearly a sentimental choice. I'm not sure why the NBA has to have a silhouette in the logo anyways.
