This was a small private Christian college catering to young people who had been home schooled. So these women were not feminists and were probably sexually naive. Fuck, I came from a more varied background but was shocked when a guy I met shortly after arriving at Cal invited me to have a cup of tea and discuss the peace movement, and I found out that wasn't what he was really interested in.

    Told him to get lost.
    He didn't believe me.
Took my whole first quarter to ditch the jerk.

    I'm not excusing this guy.

But speaking at the larger picture, we have a societal issue where boys are told through movies/television/etc that girls like to be chased. That it's romantic to be persistent. That it's normal for girls to play hard to get. The whole freaking Hallmark Channel movie collection is about women who are dating the wrong guy and who meet some guy that they start out hating but eventually fall in love with and leave their partner for. This is the message we're sending to people.

And on the flip side, we have a society where it is still very rare for girls to ask boys out. It's rare for women to express their feelings first. It's also rare for women to be very clear that they're not interested. I'll give an example. When I was around 22 I ran into a girl that I remembered from high school while I was at PCC. We talked a few times on campus. I asked her for her number and she gave it to me. I called, got her voicemail a couple times, left messages and never heard back from her. Still saw her around campus and it was awkward. So in this scenario, did she feel like she couldn't say no? She felt like she had to give me her number? And how am I supposed to be able to tell the difference if someone is friendly when I see them? I was young and stupid. I was horrible at reading signals. I was bad at being able to tell when a girl did like me, and probably worse at being able to tell when a girl didn't. So here I was, excited to spend time with this girl and instead she just ghosts me. This was all before social media so I can't even imagine what it would be like now.

This wasn't the only time this happened to me in my youth, and I got friend zoned a few times because I wasn't clear about my intentions and I was too scared to make a move. Eventually as I got older I became more comfortable in my skin and I became more clear about what I wanted. When I met my wife I was very clear with her that I didn't want to be friends. That I was interested in more. It was nice to have things out on the table and she was actually the one who asked me out on our first date. But I wasn't even remotely prepared to do that when I was in high school or college.

Can't speak for other women, but more than once in my youth I told a man not interested and he said in so many words that he could just rape me. Told politely and it was you don't really mean it. Told rudely and I was a bitch who needed to have sense beaten into me.

So stop making fucking excuses for men. Harassment and assault is not the woman's fault.

I have had women grab my ass.

I had an underage girl who I gently told I was not interested, go around and tell a bunch of girls that we slept together (thank god nothing came of that).

I had a friend get extremely angry and tell people I led her on when I said I wasn't interested in being anything more than friends.

What would have happened if I had accused any of those girls of harassment or assault? Not a damn thing. Was any of that my fault? Nope. But if two of those girls decided to accuse me of rape, guess where my ass would have been? In prison. The stakes are extremely high for men who are accused of rape, and often times they are convicted with very little evidence, and even if they are acquitted their lives are changed forever.

But if you think I'm making excuses when I say that due process needs to run its course because everyone deserves a fair trial, well, sorry. I have seen what the courts and the court of public opinion does to men when a woman accuses them of something. Please show me in the last 10 years where a woman went to prison based on the word of a man. Please show me where a woman's career was ruined because a man came out with an allegation.

My best friend's wife was having an affair with a friend of ours. When he found out, she went straight to the cops and accused him of beating her up several months prior. Not one ounce of evidence. Not one witness. Her story changed several times. In fact her story was so inconsistent that a Judge threw out her request for a restraining order. Did any of it matter? Nope. He was convicted based on the testimony of someone committing adultery. The judge wouldn't allow any evidence related to the affair. The judge wouldn't allow any testimony from neighbors who lived next to them in an apartment. Nothing. He hadn't committed a crime before that and in the 10 years since, he hasn't committed any other crimes. He's happily married to someone else, but his ex wife tried to ruin his life because she wanted the kid and she wanted to run away with her new lover to the other side of the country.

So I'm sorry if I don't just immediately believe everyone. If someone did something wrong, accuse them in court and present your evidence. People have ulterior motives.

Jimmy Carter, George Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden instantly come to mind. But what about LBJ, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan?

The problem is that the system isn't changing with the times.

We still see police arrest the man even if he was the one calling for help because of abuse.

Male teachers have to go to extreme measures to protect themselves from being accused by underage girls, IE not being alone in a room with students, not allowing any kind of physical contact, etc. I essentially experienced this first hand. When I was 20 I was helping out at a community theater group that I had been a part of when I was a kid. There was a bunch of 15 year old girls and they all liked to flirt with me and get touchy and I had to be extremely careful. One girl took it too far and wrote me a love note. I immediately gave it to the directors of the group. I found out years later that the girl had told some of the other girls that she and I had slept together. This was in the early 2000s and I suspect that if this kind of thing happened now, I would have been arrested. Those rumors are taken much more seriously these days.

There are no consequences for women who falsely accuse a man of wrongdoing, but the consequences for the man are severe.

We as a society have to be extremely careful about allegations being taken as fact, and let due process run its course.

Men saying they are afraid to mentor women just another excuse for hiring or promoting men.

Incidentally there are a lot of consequences for women who accurately accuse men.
