Trent is one of the few players we can sell high on. The Spurs are looking to move Patty Mills, DeRozan, Gaye and Lamracus......we could get DeRozan for Trent and he's a decent wing defender ...we could also get JJ Redick for him or probably a lot of players who are on the block...Griffin, maybe Drummond.
We cannot get Derozan for Trent. You have to add at least 2 out of DJJ/Hood/Cov/Nurk in order to match salaries. If you choose DJJ/Hood, you also need to add another filler salary like Ant or Zach. Not to mention any trade would likely push us into the tax.
I didn't say how you'd get him...just that this is a list of guys available...you might even use a future pick in a trade with Trent.....lot of options.
true...and while I believe the Blazers won't pay to have both Trent and CJ long-term (assuming Trent gets 18-25M/year), it's not like the luxury tax kicks in the moment Trent is re-signed. Blazers would have 8 months before the following trade deadline to make a trade. And even then, if Portland stays under the tax this season, the trigger clock for repeater tax is reset. If my math is correct, repeater tax liability wouldn't be triggered until the trade deadline of the final year of CJ's contract (check me on that....I might have it wrong) of course, while management is juggling the contracts of the CJ/Trent contracts, Dame's prime keeps burning away
Don't believe this at all....Dame is better than he's ever been and he's not close to burning away.....Lebron either....I think this is an overused panic sentiment...Dame is a 4 year college guy....unlike Enes and Melo...he didn't get to the NBA at 18....different way to start a career and different path to breaking down physically....Chauncey Billups won his first ring later in his career....and he wasn't burned out when he won it either. Dame could win this year. Imagine that! Dame also has a backcourt mate who can drop 50 on a team...he's not without help..plus if this is Dame's prime.....I've enjoyed every year of it.....there's no waste in what he's done with his brand and his MVP possibilities...he's actually the reason some free agents are talking about Portland now.....that's got value.
We are not trading for a DeRozan, Lamarcus, Griffin, Drummond, etc on $20+million contracts. We don't have big contracts to trade with Trent, and we are not going into the luxury tax. So something like Hood, Zach, Trent gets us to maybe a $15 million player. Any more salary and we have to put in one of Nurk/DJJ/RoCo which needs to be a higher quality starter coming back.
You're assuming I didn't know that already....but it's all good. Yeah...we need to make numbers work...if that takes throwing in a Zach Collins or Hoodie....fair enough....they'll figure out what it takes if it is on the table...also don't know how much salary Jody is willing to take on to add an impact player....she's got plenty of cash sitting around
I'm fine trading Trent if we get a longer term piece or a lottery quality draft pick in return. I valued CJ more prior to the season so none of this years results change my opinion there. I do agree that Trent hasn't excelled as hoped so that lessens my expectations of him. But if we cant get a long term piece or quality draft pick just keep Trent. Its not certain he will be overpaid, nor is it certain we can't make a conference finals run if him and others get healthy. I wouldn't expect a conference finals, but I wouldn't sell contributors out of frustration or hopelessness. Dame only have ~5 elite years left and I wouldn't give up completely on this season yet. I want to see what Dame does. Last year losing 1-4 in the playoffs still gave us an epic Dame bubble run that I'll always remember.
1. I'm just concerned about this season and winning a championship. 2. If a 'ship doesn't happen we could be looking at a new coach and/or GM. 3. Let whoever is GM deal with the Trent and CJ conundrum. We're in a Win Now mode! Trent is lethal off the bench. Let's go fuck some teams up!
did you think about the context of what I was talking about before you launched into your reply? I was talking about the long term prospect of CJ/Trent on the Blazers with awkward contracts, and looking ahead to the last year of CJ's deal when repeater tax might be an issue. Dame will be 33 going on 34 then. No matter how long you want to believe the best of Dame's prime is, the window of that prime is closing right now.
yeah...I thought about your post...and this one....which I have no desire to follow because I don't believe Dame's success is closing right now...I think it's wide open right now and will get stronger moving forward....did you read my 4 year college guy post or my comparison to Lebron still dominating at 17 years into the league?.Dame is in year 9....and I think Trent should be traded before we have to match an offer for him...my glass is half full with Dame and the Blazers right now
The NBA always has unexpected drama in the off season. (See Harden and the Rockets for example.) I could see interesting things happening with the Clippers and their stars. I could see the Greek Freak wanting a divorce from the Bucks. We've got pieces and the Star to make the Blazers a possible player in any unexpected player movements. And while Trent isn't a star for star trade player he is an acceptable "hey fans, our star wanted out but at least we got an acceptable possible star and some other pieces in return for him." Actually having a 2nd round player who developed into something with value is actually a good problem to have.
Sure, thats why I originally suggested a package deal of some sort with the targeted value coming back Portland's way being a 2021 draft pick. Few assets are universally attractive to all teams, but I'm sure there are some with championship aspirations in need of another swing shooter (Bucks & 76ers possibly?). There may others who view him as a player at a position of need & trading for him today could give them a leg up on resigning him. STOMP
I agree with this. Unless there's a super deal offered that brings in a different player who would help achieve Sly's objective more than Trent would (Sly, when you say, "fuck some teams up", is that dog for "bite in the crotch"?) I say stay with Trent for the rest of the season. The Blazers can always match whatever Trent gets offered and then trade him before the deadline next season to avoid any salary cap/luxury tax issues.
Because of his play in the bubble last year? He looked pretty good to me as well. But wasn't he playing a lot of SF?
Beat me to it. They finally get an up and comer that plays defense and is full of energy and can stick a three consistently and now because he needs to continue to grow as a defender he needs to be traded? Can you say Future Blazer Killer? What the actual F%@K are we thinking here?
