lgbtqnation.com Mitch McConnell blocked the Ruth Bader Ginsburg memorial from the Capitol Rotunda Bil Browning Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has a reputation as one of the most ruthless members of Congress other than Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). But a new book reveals just how low the senator is willing to go in his partisan crusade to disrespect progressives at any cost. After the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a liberal icon and feminist hero, McConnell allegedly refused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) request to honor the justice with a memorial in the Capitol Rotunda. Susan Page’s new book, Madam Speaker, includes the revelation in a passage about the California congresswoman’s relationship with the notoriously devious senator. “Mitch McConnell is not a force for good in our country,” Pelosi told Page. “He is an enabler of some of the worst stuff, and an instigator of some of it on his own.” Ginsburg would have been the first woman to lie in state in the rotunda. Instead, her coffin was placed in Statuary Hall on the House side of the Capitol. Both McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) refused to attend the service.
Individuals Who Have Lain in State or in Honor Since Henry Clay in 1852, the U.S. Capitol has been used as a place to pay tribute to the Nation’s most distinguished citizens. Made available for public viewing in the Capitol, persons who have “lain in state” traditionally have been American officials, judges, and military leaders, including 12 U.S. Presidents. In 1998, to recognize two Capitol Police officers who died in the line of duty, Congress granted use of the Rotunda for their caskets to “lie in honor.”
So, some cops and a shitty homophobic money-grubbing priest are cool, but not a Supreme Court justice. Good to know.
Everyone should criticize Mitch McConnell. As our generation's example of the worst human in America, he would have been the one in the 1800s arguing that slavery was our noblest institution and blacks were better off as slaves.
