https://ripcityproject.com/2020/04/29/portland-trail-blazers-exec-traded-self/ I didn't know Spoelstra traded himself for two weeks in order to get a player back. That's crazy.
I guess sometimes I get too optimistic. But we now know that there seems to be a channel of communication possible from McGowan through Spo's dad to Spo. And actually we have been hearing Spoelstra's name for over a week now. Maybe it has some legs.
also maybe Spoelstra would like to have his next gig be in his hometown following a guy that lasted 9 years...and a leader that wants to play in Portland forever...
Asking sincerely, because I can't think of many examples, where all did it fail? I know Pop is coach and PoBO, and I believe Doc Rivers was for the Clippers.
A dual roles success pretty much just depends on who the GM would be. There’s no way it should be someone that has no experience working with Spo or isn’t his hire altogether. Olshey would for sure have to leave.
SVG in Detroit. Bud in ATL. Thibs in Minny. Isaiah in NY. i want the GM out scouting prospects, watching games outside his own, and be continually involved in talks to improve the team. i want the coach pouring over film and liaising with the stars, and focusing on the daily operations. the overall vision of the two could be independent.
In his non-lebron years, their defensive rating was 11, 6, 21, 9, 5, 7, 6, 11, 7. Consistently having a to 10 defense with just meh talent is one good reason.
pop doesn’t go around scouting anyone either, that’s Bufords job, but he has final say. I personally think Spoelstra has earned more power, power he won’t get in Miami as long as Riley is around. I could see him leaving if he got it elsewhere. Coaches have ambition too.
Ah yeah, there's the others. They were all in kind of the same era. I wonder what distinction there is between GM and PoBO.
Still not a great idea to combine the jobs. Enough evidence to know that unless they're slotted in long term, it won't work.
I wonder if Spoelstra and Barry weren't interviewing for Neil's job and Hammon and Billups Stayley and DAntoni as coaches
Yeah. Sprague isn't a click bait type of personality. I've listened to them since they were after primetime. That being said, spo isn't coming here.
I have lots of reason for not believing Hammon would be the best coach for the Blazers (never head coached, offensive, not defensive specialist), but people do realize that if the Blazers hire her and she doesn't succeed, there is no way they will be able to fire her. The pressure from the public and the ghost of Pops will be overwhelming. You better like her in Portland for a very long time.
