Strikes me as odd that you are talking about race and politics and I guess religion because Dame endorsed an accused rapist to be the coach of a sports team.

This is the sports section of this here forum, but I can tell you with certainty that you do not know what fascism is. Read more, then embarrass yourself.

You are all aware that you watch a sport in which the players are likely 99% liberal? Remember the bubble? Players wore words that irked the likes of you and Q. Remember the protests? Players walked with the protesters. Dame led the way. I'm afraid you are following that and those which you villify.

And IMO, that’s great for Billups. He could turn out to be the greatest. BUT, regardless of that this was a stupid hire for Olshey.

Did the team really think there wouldn’t be this kind of reaction?

Did they not prepare Dame for it?

Ruben Patterson plead guilty and has to register as a sex offender. No charges were brought against Billups and he paid some money to make something he wasn’t charged for go away. Seems different.

I can't say worse than Patterson. In that case there were no doubts, the team blew off concerns and he added nothing to the team.

Olshey is the Blazers GM...you don't like him fine but a GM usually hires the candidate they think is best...the job was not open for all...it was paired down to a handful of second interviews that included Dame....if you don't trust the Blazers front office and think Chauncey is a cancer on society...maybe rethink your allegiance to the franchise because the vetting is over and it IS HIS JOB NOW...Welcome Chauncey Billups! I'm going to cheer for his continued success here as a basketball coach and mentor to our players.

One could literally say not nearly as bad as Patterson. One is a convicted ex offender who plead guilty and the other is none of those

The blazers under Olshey have brought in nothing but high character guys...when’s the last time they had an arrest or even questionable behavior? Billups also had no issues before or in the 24 years after this “incident.” At what point do you give them the benefit of the doubt?

I truly did not think there would be. It didnt even cross my mind. If you look at most other boards and other teams, hardly anybody brings this stuff up. Dallas fans are, for the most part, happy with Kidd. Little is said about his actual conviction (worse than Billups). Most have let the past be the past. NOBODY has brought up Billups' accusation in YEARS. Go look at message boards of the entire NBA. Most fans of other teams like the hire for Portland. I've found only one article from anyone outside of Portland who has even mentioned the accusation in recent years. Billups has denied the accusation, was never convicted of anything, has been a model citizen for the 24 years since, has won the J Walter Kennedy citizenship award (The J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award is an annual National Basketball Association award given since 1975 to a player, coach, or staff member who shows "outstanding service and dedication to the community."), and is beloved elsewhere. But because Portland has to be outraged at all times if not being super progressive in their moves, they lash out by digging up dirt from the 90s. It's truly amazing to me. I wont underestimate Portland again. This city has officially lost its collective mind (at least the vocal minority)

I'm not saying Chauncey is guilty. Fuck if I know. But man am I getting a lot of shit for thinking that an explanation is in order. Why is that a crazy notion? Why is it wrong to be irked by a bunch of dudes in an internet forum acting like it makes sense? It doesn't make sense. An explanation is certainly forthcoming, but all I've heard so far--and it isn't without merit--that he's been vetted. But that is simply a word. We need details.

Right or wrong, what you do matters. It follows you, oftentimes, defines you. Olshey did not read the room when he hired Billups. It was a clumsy mistake, and might end up being a huge mistake, which is all I was saying. Everyone is putting my theoretical exercise into a strange category.

At this point it seems like half of fanbase would be happy to welcome Stotts back as a perfect fit for their "culture".

And I was one leg od Becky's train, but I had this one concern. This team needs some strong voice and it is, imo, big risk, that Becky could not be enough to make our players work.
We BADLY need someone, who can wake our stars the fuck up. I'm done watching CJ's stupid, selfish play, done with Nurk keeping his head down and Melo trying to climb in scorers list.
I think that, from basketball point, Billups is someone who we need in this team right now.

...but I can't really go over this rape until it is all clear.

Yep, the world just falls into dichotomous neat piles when you examine it: right and wrong, black and white, what the fuck...

I think people should view things critically. This situation is unusual and deserves to be examined. I'm honestly (not) astonished that folks in here are so resistant to doing so.

You're assuming the people who vet candidates have not been through this process and in doing that also contribute to trying someone in the court of public opinion....which is basically what happened on Jan 6th.....I think this whole topic has been sensationalized and 100 percent of that is fanbase driven....innocent until proven guilty and the statute of limitations are in place for a damned good reason. More of this dysfunctional torch and pitchfork ranting is going to hurt the team and lose the progress made under Dame to attract free agents or re-sign a guy like Norm. People need to chill the fuck out or stop following a team led by someone they don't apparently have trust or faith in....I read the info about his case and there wasn't even enough proof of guilt by Chauncey to arrest a black man in Boston 24 years ago....irish cops were never known in Boston for their open mindedness especially when it came to black rape suspects......my gut says it's resolved.

People just don’t think before they speak anymore. Social media, twitter specifically, almost demands immediate reaction, and often times those are emotionally driven. Mix that in with a tribe mentality that seemingly runs today’s world (ie if you don’t immediately condemn Billups with the rest of us you are now a rape apologist and a garbage human) and you get what we’ve seen in the last day or so.

Once this all cools down, and it will because there’s really nothing there, a lot of fans are gonna have to go back on their own words. And most of them will, because they never really cared in the first place.
