If Powell walks with no compensation of any kind it will be a devastating blunder in a series of epic fuck ups by Olshey. It is imperative we either re-sign him which is preferred or at least get something in a S/T
Obviously if it's the only option I would want a sign and trade before letting Norm walk for nothing but even a sign and trade would be a real shame. Powell is a great fit next to Dame. He is a really good defender and can both take the ball to the hole and make the three at a great clip. He doesn't need the ball or even need to be on with his shot to make the kind of difference this team needs made. So I want Norm signed and obviously CJ traded but even if you have decided to give Dame and CJ another chance, I think you sign Powell. You have to know that if the Dame/CJ back court is given new life by Chauncey... Norman Powell will be worth more in a trade at the deadline than he will be in a sign and trade now. More likely we'll see that even with a new head coach Dame's and CJ's redundant strengths and more importantly weaknesses won't work together and we will be able to trade CJ for a position of need and plug and play Norm at the starting 2.
Assets who are worth as much as Powell walking out the door for nothing is not an option for Olshey. Powell could leave no matter what Portland offers, but there’s been absolutely no indication of that out of his camp. There’s no likely way to replace him this year, sign and trades are difficult to say the least, and Portland’s market is what it is. The simplest answer is Portland pays up — market price and more. CJ traded or not. Powell signs with the Blazers for $$$ and playing with Lillard and the rest — CJ traded or not. Again, he COULD choose to walk. If the Blazers want SNAFU and FUBAR, they let him walk … and then justify it to Lillard. This is a tipping point.
I think Powell goes for whoever gives him the most money. As long as we don't max him I'm fine with a big deal, maybe 60% of the max.
I think Olshey has no choice but to match whatever offer Norm gets...he can't lose the Gary Trent asset value and once Norm is signed, you can see how he works under Chauncey or trade him down the road for a Miles Turner type PF
A S&T will be virtually impossible to do with Powell’s byc status. Best bet is Billups convincing him to stay
yeah....Olshey has painted himself into a corner with re-signing Powell. It would be a disaster, in many ways, if Powell walks. Olshey can't let that happen so, he's likely to do what he has done many times before and that's start out by bidding against himself and significantly overpay. If Powell's market is 20M/year, I would not be surprised to see Olshey pay Powell 25M. I also don't see any reason why Powell, or his agent, would give the Blazers a discount Blazers would go deeply into the tax next season, but that was probably already assumed in the Blazer and Vulcan front offices. But Olshey has an out in that in the following summer, only 3 players on the team currently have guaranteed contracts for 2022: Dame-CJ-Little. It's a prime opportunity for a major reboot of the roster if next season fails. That would keep Portland out of the repeater tax it's also poor management....an all-or-nothing situation after years of missed opportunities, but that's the perfect metaphor for Olshey's tenure
He’s not going to sign with the Blazers to play SF again and the trio of Dame/CJ/Norm starting got worked over by Austin Rivers and other G-Leaguers in the playoffs. It didn’t work. Trade CJ and convince Norm to be the starting SG or he’s going to sign elsewhere and be the starting SG. Im not sure how Olshey is to blame when it was assumed he was a rental last year and Trent Jr. showed everyone his limitations as a player.
Norm playing major minutes with Dame and CJ didn’t work. Why run the same line-up next year when it’s proven to not win against play-off teams? Paying Norm $20-25 million a year to be 6th Man isn’t a good use of that contract. One of CJ/Norm won’t be on the roster next season IMO because it doesn’t work.
That has nothing to do with what I said. You said Neil deserves no blame because Powell "was assumed a rental", which is what I was addressing. Powell wasn't just a rental and if Neil let's him walk for nothing than he definitely deserves some blame.
