Not to mention, has a very popular podcast. I wonder if he can continue that from prison...

Innocent until proven guilty is part of the legal system.

Public perception is completely unrelated and has no requirement to prove guilt.

...right, was thinking similarly -- despite their financial status (likely not many money managing savants on that list), their medical bills add up. And if I'm reading this correctly that's only $4M split between 18 players? What's the price of knee surgery these days? Or how about premium health insurance coverage every month they were out of the league. Fuck these pro league organizations not taking care of their players in perpetuity.

I shall. I'm legitimately trying to understand why people are up in arms about this.

My father's relatively routine hernia surgery cost upwards of 50k before insurance, and he was outpatient. The system is broken.

Uh, they weren't doing this to get free healthcare fellas - they were reporting fake claims and pocketing the money.

I can see Darius Miles googling expensive surgeries and then submitting a bill for a hysterectomy.

Not up in arms. But if you don't see a problem with 18 people stealing on average $222,222 then I don't know what to tell you. You and I would be prosecuted for stealing much less - these guys who at least used to have fame and money shouldn't get special treatment.

2.5 million for 18 players. So on average, about 140k each, that too over a period of 4 years. This hardly seems worth the trouble.

Outside of Terrance Williams, I don't see anyone getting jail time if convicted.

I didn't say they shouldn't be prosecuted. I'm mostly just apathetic towards the actual crime. They defrauded insurance companies for less than 150k each. Just doesn't register as front page news to me.

i mean, there was talk of ben simmons faking an injury and not play to get his 8 million, and no one batted an eye. It was even bandied about on TV shows by former players.

Jimmy Butler was held out for "general soreness" so he could still get paid without playing in Minnesota.

<40k/yr doesn't do much for me.

Huh? Seems newsworthy that 18 former NBA guys received 3M in the span of 3 years for defrauding their health insurance provider? It’s a big story. Fraud? NBA guys?

Darius Miles, Ruben Patterson, and Sebastian Telfair were part of a massive ring of former NBA players to defraud the NBA

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Damn, I still had high hopes for Telfair. He's what, 26, 27? Feels like he's been around forever.

If these guys were minimum wage workers bagging groceries or flipping burgers would this be "news"?

Given that at least some of those guys suffered career ending injuries, I hope there is more to this than just nit-picking their medical bills.
