I agree this has been a "problem" for 10 years now. I think where people get a little frustrated is the Blazers have came out and said they want all their fans to be able to access Blazer games and then when they change to a new broadcast partner, they appear to have picked the platform that pays them the most vs one who has committed to offering their channel to providers at a price that the Blazers know will be picked up by the DirectTV, Dish, YouTubeTV, and Hulu's of the world. The Blazers could have worked that into a deal had they been willing to take a discount. Ultimately I get it is a business, but in the sports world, you're supposed to try and trick your fans into thinking you care about them being able to access your product.

So i understand whats done is done. But why cant the blazers put pressure on root to get more contacts done or they will not renew and never give root a chance at anything again?

in other words, why cant the Blazers flex on this?

They don’t care. They get the money either way.
Which in turn is what makes it harder for me to care about the team.

Yeah, the thing with sports "fans" is that they are called fanatics for a reason. They know fans won't stop being fans of the team just because they have to jump through some hoops to watch hoops. They may bitch and moan about it, but you're not losing as many customers as you would in the traditional sense when a normal company pisses off their consumers.

So just maximize short term value (eg. get the best contract you can, regardless of other factors), and the rest is not as important.

    McGowan fucked up, big time.

But the biggest issue is ROOT demanding too much in negotiations, then painting it as other TV services choosing not to have them, and then going and telling Blazer fans to go call up those companies and tell them to carry ROOT Sports.

ROOT is greedy as fuck. The team didn't have much of a choice but gave up their leverage without forcing enough action from ROOT.

I think the Blazers had to operate under the assumption that Root was going to be as greedy as possible and put one of these options in their contract lanague:

    1) They can cancel the contract if <x>% of services do not have Root in their lineup package
    2) Root must offer their channel at <x> amount per subscriber to providers
    3) If <x>% of services don't have Root, they can offer their own internal streaming service.

Yes there are flaws in each of my 3 proposals I just spit-balled out, but all those smart people in a room, with time, could have ironed something out if they wanted to.

Does anyone know how far the local blackout map extends? I just moved back to Walla Walla and want to get Team Pass. I can’t find a simple answer, is there a blackout map?

I tend to agree with this theory, but on a broad sense, this is a little tricky. Part of their business is to pull in people who are not fans and make them fringe fans, then take the fringe fans and make them the die-hard fans who will follow the team anywhere. Pretty much everyone here falls into that last category, but I'm guessing the # of die-hard fans do not make up the majority of their revenue. Keeping and growing your market (fan base) is important and it is hard to pull people in if they have no chance of watching your product.

What tier is roots sports on fuboTV? Why not just go up on it with 3 buddies then cancel when the season is over. It’s 20 bucks or so a month with 3 ppl.

Agreed. Undoubtedly they were aware of this outcome, but went to the highest bidder in the short-term and may or may not have factored in the potential lost revenue of growing their fan base.

Mr. Allen was around during the last contract, channel switch. When Comcast wouldn’t work a deal out with DirecTV and others.

Doesn’t matter how tech savvy the team is, this is on ROOT, they have the rights to the broadcast, NOT the team.

The Blazers aren’t paying anybody to broadcast their games, ROOT is paying THEM.

They made the best business decision for the organization to make the most money. Pretty much like any other business. If your complaint is that they should have taken less money for their product, that’s not really how successful businesses work.

Ya, I just have never seen that. Local broadcasts put promos on the screen all the time…..but not the NBA…not the actual league pass. They can’t actually. They don’t have the ability to do that. If NBATV takes our feed, then they may do that on THEIR feed though. You guys might have to do a screen grab next time and we’ll take a look.

Are you applying this logic to Fred Meyer, Chevron or MudBay?
