Oct 18th is the deadline to get him extended, or he presumably goes to RFA next summer. Quick had this to say at the start of camp: A source said the Blazers and Simons’ agent, Bill Duffy, have not yet engaged in discussions, but are expected to closer to the Oct. 18 deadline. “I don’t know anything about the extension; I’m focused on the season,” Simons said. “I know it’s a big season for me. So I’m not worried about it. My priority is to go out there and play well.” I wonder if his "thumb" injury that is keeping him out tonight and did on Wednesday was due to contract negotiations.
Other 2018 draft extensions: Luka- Super Max DPE Young- Max SGA- Max Porter Jr.- Max Wendell Carter Jr. - 4yrs, 50 mil (just announced, ridiculously good deal) Robert Williams - 4 yrs, 54 mil Gary Trent Jr.- 3yrs, 54 mil One more fun fact, the last first round pick that Neil drafted AND gave a second contract to was .... CJ.
I wouldn't offer him an extension... he is too unproven, and the Blazers have so much money invested in guards, any overpay would hurt this franchise too much. Roco and Nurk are the guys I would consider offering extensions... Actually mostly just Roco. Nurk has injury concerns, motivation concerns, physical fitness concerns, mental toughness concerns, and is at a position which is easily replaceable. Very few teams will be in the veteran center above the MLE market, hurting his value. Roco probably has the lowest ceiling of any of the three but is at the most in demand position. Even for limited role players offers for these types of players can get way above the MLE.
lol congrats on making the pedantic post of the day. would you be happier if titled that as 2018 draftees who received a 2nd contract?
Thank you. I'm neither happy nor sad about it. If someone compared a dozen types of apples to one orange I'd similarly say they are different. Comparing a resigned free agent in Trent to a list of all other players that have extension offers a year from free agency doesn't make sense.
Right now Simon's value is a minimum contract. He hasn't been able to show that he even impacts the team positively. There is absolutely no reason to offer an extension at this point. If he plays decent, he would be restricted - so Portland could match a contract offer.
honestly, i had forgotten that he was extension eligible until i saw the carter jr. news. I think this is most likely.
Options: Blazers getting extend him Blazers don't extend him, trade him at it before deadline Blazers don't extend him. Next summer a team pays him way more than the Blazers will match. Blazers don't extend him, he gets no big offers and Portland resigns him.
Neil has history with this. Two more possibilities; Blazers don't extend him then don't try to resign him (Zach Collins UFA) Blazers don't extend him then pay a ton to resign him (Meyers Leonard RFA) I suppose you can add "he gets injured" to the middle of both those statements, which makes the second even dumber.
I might be wrong about this, but if the Blazers gave Ant any kind of substantial extension, he'd become BYC in trades, increasing the degree of difficulty of including him
The fact that we wasted all that draft capital on Collins and let him walk for nothing should have gotten Neil fired. So tired of this dude.
