Fish on OTG said that maybe you can't extend a player until the last year of their contract. If that is a rule, it's fucking moronic and the players need to get rid of that in the next CBA.
Its a rule that seems to benefit the young/improving players. Not sure why they would want to get rid of it.
As soon as you draft the player they are your property you should be able to do whatever you want with contracts. If a player plays one year and has a chance to get long term security he should be able to do that
