How do we know Dame himself isn’t behind this? Clearly he and others were pissed when we were bounced out of the playoffs last year. Stotts is gone and he got the new coach he wanted.

    Disagree.

I believe Aldridge wanted to stay until I got injured. No it wasn't a guarantee, but it was a good risk for the Blazers to take as they had legit contender upside.

Trading Aldridge would've been a mistake.

Because not trading him was the best chance of the Blazers winning a title.

No it didn't work out. But it was the right choice at the time based on what was known then.

If Aldridge wanted to stay he would have extended. As soon as he refused to take the max he was offered he should have been traded (obviously at the next opportune time).

We let a perennial All star and (at the time) our best player walk for nothing. THAT was the mistake.

It's all about the contract. If you have an all star caliber player unwilling to sign an extension you trade them before they can become an unrestricted free agent.

You let them know that they will never be unrestricted in Portland. Ever.

Absolutely. To those who say, "There's no way he could've known...." Well, it was his job to know. It was his job to sniff out the truth about Aldridge's actual motivations. Olshey has a huge salary and a lot of power, and in exchange he's supposed to have the relationships and instincts and analytical abilities that allow him to make smart roster moves that the average bulletin board poster doesn't see.

It is absolutely fair to point out Aldridge walking as a failure. Maybe given Aldridge's opacity, he shouldn't be crucified for it like he should for the 2016 contracts. But it's definitely a strike against him. When a franchise player walks for zero compensation, it always reflects badly on the GM.

To be fair, the extension we were able to offer was far less than what he could get as a free agent. It made absolutely no sense for ANY free agent to sign what we could present to him, IIRC.

To add to this, I’m not sure why he couldn’t sniff it out when it was so obvious to some of us on here that he would leave.

So far this season, Lillard himself has been the biggest drag on this team's performance. Prime Lillard will make this squad a contender, if he resurfaces.

as Phat points out, if Aldridge was intending to stay in Portland he would have signed an extension. I'm not 100% positive, but under the CBA rules at that time, a max extension for Aldridge would have been equal to any max he would have received from any other team, EXCEPT it would have come with bigger step raises. So, he was turning down more money from Portland than he would have made anywhere else. That right there is a pretty significant indication he was not going to re-sign

it's true, that team was probably the closest Portland has been to contention since the Pippen team; they certainly haven't been closer since. But,IMO, it's also true they were much more pretender than contender. So then, trading Aldridge would not really have been risking a championship.

the Blazers were not going to get a lot for Aldridge if they traded him just prior to the deadline (about the time they traded for Afflalo). But whatever they would have received, was more than they ended up with. And, trading him in the off-season before that deadline would have likely brought back much more than at the deadline

I agree that on the list of Olshey miscalculations it ranks rather low....but it's certainly there

Then what happens if as a “fuck you” LMA lies comes out and says “hey I wanted to resign but they blazers did me dirty and traded me”

Now the Blazers reputation becomes extremely bad around the league and probably gives a sour lasting taste for a young Dame about the franchise
