I was thinking about that trade with Tampa, and Gorton failed on that trade miserably. That trade was in the same category as McDonough/Gomez IMO. We basically gave McDonough as a gift for Tampa. It may be worse than McDonough/Gomez. At least MTL went deep into playoffs that year with Gomez, ECF, and lost to PHI if I remember correctly. We gifted McDonough.

Hajek has no value, Howden we gave up for nothing as he had no value either. So we gave up JT Miller and McDonough for Lundkvist. To get JT Miller back, the player that we drafted, who was all ours, to begin with, we have to trade Lundkvist and probably Chytil. It is actually worse than I thought originally, we traded top pair Stanley Cup defenseman and a 1st round pick in Chytil for a bag of pucks.

Please let me know if I got this wrong.

There is one aspect of the trade that is left out....salary cap flexibility. No Bradman if mcd was still on the team. And mcds was trending backwards.

McDonagh was not playing well on this team when he was dealt. Unfortunately, Lundkvist keeps playing with that scrub Nemeth who Gallant is in love with. Why I have no idea.

If Lundkvist becomes a good 8-10y Ranger i can live with it. I wouldn't give up on Hajek fully yet though he may be tossed into a trade. Like BDA said it was about cap flex vs McDonoughs value at the time. Howden was clearly a dud, at least here. For Miller i think you could swing a deal by sending a 1st in place of Lundkvist. Maybe a 1st, 2nd and Chytil. Picks mean nothing to us for the next few years.

Picks mean a ton to us the next few years because when those players are ready in 3 to 5 years, we are going to have players like Trouba, Kreider, Strome, Goodrow, Lindren, Panarin, Zibanejad, etc.... that will be older and making too much money to work the cap and will need to be moved and replaced. With the salary cap you need a consistent pipeline in your farm or you will go through rebuild like this team had to with our GM pissing away all our picks for go for it now deals. If anything they should be acquiring extra picks for players they don't want anymore or won't make this team but can play elsewhere. Much like the Buchnevich trade.

Yeah, i mean I'm not saying give up 1sts for 3y straight or anything but in this instance if you need to give up one to help the team for these next two seasons with Miller or whoever, I'd rather do that and keep a Lundkvist or Robertson. You would have to fill a 3rd pair D spot for the rest of the year and i don't think they trust Hajek enough or feel Schneider is quite ready.

I would not give up Robertson under any circumstances. Nemeth blows and Robertson is the guy they are figuring to be a part of their d on the left side for the future.

Hopefully they can get some kind of upgrade from him for the rest of this year.

His name is Hajek but Gallant obviously doesn't like him.

It's like another Graves situation where he'll go somewhere else and be a regular.

The Rangers are more competitive than they've been in decades and still the knocks come now about the McDonough trade? As Al accurately pointed out there was no way to resign Ryan with the cap situation so something had to be done and I'll take the Breadman or Trouba over McDonough all day. I don't think Drury has shown himself to be a desperation deal maker and with the Rangers positioned where they are he doesn't have to be. I would like Miller back too, hated that the Rangers traded him but JT was left hanging by the inept coaches who refused to even give a #1 pick a chance. The real question is whether the Rangers would have been better if they somehow kept McD, my opinion is no.

Again Miller had a terrible work ethic here you keep ignoring that and making up bullshit it was his fault not the coachings staff.

Lol Millers played 2 straight seasons without missing a game - screams work ethic issues but keep trying head muckety muck of making things up.
