Talking about "trading" Dame is not nuts, just an option that IMO should be considered as "due diligence", as should be rebuilding around him. Take away the emotion and there is logic and common sense. However I will say with this injury issue this is NOT the time to trade him - not gonna get enough IMO with injury doubt. Now if we actually have enough decent trade scenarios that we have a chance to rebuild around Dame then my all means try that - I have my doubts we have enough "assets" but would love to be proven wrong, frankly the ONE saving grace could be if we land a top 3 pick and use that to land a star that actually fits well with Dame. I am starting to think Dame is going to sit out the rest of the season, we will play the young guys as much as possible and look to get rid of CJ/Roco/Nurk/Nance (maybe Norm but I like him) before the deadline for decent assets if we can and then perhaps swing for a big trade this summer with perhaps a top 3 pick in our pocket.

Roster building 101 - never trade a lotto pick. Even if it means getting your star help.

I feel like Neil loved to use draft picks instead of swinging for the fence because it would buy him time.

"Look at all these tall white guys! Eventually they will maybe possibly develop into something (if they're healthy)."

I get it. If we get the number 1 pick or a top 3 pick and can get an Evan Mobley. Absolutely. But, timelines don't completely mesh with Dame. That doesn't mean it can't work, but you have to shuffle our other pieces anyways. We can not have a Dame - CJ backcourt anymore.

If a star is in his prime and available, you absolutely consider the pick in trade talks to see what it would take.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I suspect it was his lazy way of swinging for the fences. He probably fancied himself as swinging for stars in the draft, which doesn't require all that messy relationship-building and getting other teams to agree to things, like trades. After drafting Lillard (whether we give him "credit," if he liked Lillard at that spot, I'm sure he takes credit for choosing Lillard) and McCollum, his two "gems," I would bet he saw himself as a great drafter.

easier said than done. if all it took was salary filler + mid lotto pick to land a younger star on a long term deal, that would be a no brainer.

I would be fine with stars in their late 20's early 30's too. Players that fit Dames timeline.

I really really hope you're right about this. Let's see Cronin do some big, smart things and keep this job. I like the guy but if he doesn't make really big changes to this roster at the deadline, we have to find a GM that's willing to make the bold moves it's going to take to get us off this treadmill and into contention.

Oh and I do also want him to trade Norm and I want him to trade Ant... the only thing that clearing the deck for Ant and not trading him will do is make sure we either lose him for nothing or overpay him.

But we could get a Doncic or Mobley type that helps immediately or in the second year. Or trade the pick. Dallas made a conscious decision to tank and look how that worked. They have a franchise player who may end up one of the greatest of all time.

yeah I get all that but I'm not a tank supporter but hey....I'm in no way saying I'm right about this...you guys could all be right but those are just my convictions about the team...I'm glad Dallas got Luka and hope he retires there too...that's my lobby for the league....stop this revolving door and let fans get attached to their Tim Duncans and Damian Lillards.

That’s why someone brought up the Suns. Chris Paul doesn’t match Booker/Ayton’s “timelines,” but it’s working.

There were still 2 months left in the season when David Robinson’s foot healed but they shut him to tank for the pick that got them Duncan.

Not sure where that comes from. The way I was using the word was referring to what has happened so far. So far this season, 30 games in, the performance has regressed from previous years. Who knows what happens the rest of the season. Any presumption would be a guess at this point, especially until his abs get better. Since this is not an isolated issue and has gone on before, who knows what it will take to be completely recovered. Hopefully he returns to form....which means, he wasn't at his normal performance level so far this season.
