A tsunami advisory is in effect for the West Coast of the United States. "A tsunami has been confirmed and some impacts are expected," the National Weather Service National Tsunami Warning Center said early Saturday.

The tsunami advisory is in effect for:

    • The California coast from the California-Mexico border to the Oregon-California border, including San Francisco Bay.
    • The Oregon coast from the Oregon-California border to the Oregon-Washington border, including the Columbia River estuary coast.
    • The outer coast of Washington state from the Oregon-Washington border to Slip Point, Columbia River estuary coast, and the Juan de Fuca Strait coast.
    • The north coast of British Columbia, and Haida Gwaii, the central coast and northeast Vancouver Island, the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, the Juan de Fuca Strait coast.
    • The inner and outer coast of Southeast Alaska from the BC-Alaska border to Cape Fairweather, Alaska.
    • South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula - Pacific coasts from Cape Fairweather, Alaska, to Unimak Pass, Alaska.
    • Aleutian Islands - Unimak Pass, Alaska, to Attu, Alaska including the Pribilof Islands.
The advisory was issued after an undersea volcano erupted Saturday near the Pacific nation of Tonga. A tsunami warning was in effect for all of the archipelago, according to the Tonga Meteorological Services. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center showed that waves of 2.6 feet were detected, according to The Associated Press.

    1. Wear a mask.

    2. Socially distance.

    3. Attack any waves with sword.

Tsunami-hit Tonga remained largely uncontactable on Sunday with telephone and internet links severed, leaving relatives in faraway New Zealand praying for their families on the Pacific islands as casualty reports had yet to come through.

The massive ash cloud covering the tiny island nation of Tonga is preventing surveillance flights from New Zealand to assess the extent of damage.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the eruption was 'hugely concerning' and agencies were still trying to establish full communications with Tonga.

One complicating factor to any international aid effort is that Tonga has so far managed to avoid any outbreaks of Covid-19.

Ms Ardern said New Zealand's military staff were all fully vaccinated and willing to follow any protocols established by Tonga.
