What you say? My answer is no. He was a big cog but a #2 with no all stars or all NBA's. I'd retire Lamarcus before CJ.
Why, though? This has been a discussion for a couple days and I am just trying to understand why. He was a huge part of our team for years but in my opinion didn't have a lasting impact (basketball wise, not personal wise).
As a player? No. Vintner? Sure. In the Schonz role as the broadcaster of a championship team? Please!
No. He was good for us and all, but I think most of the numbers we do have retired shouldn't be anyways. Retiring numbers should be saved for the best of the best.
I'm not sure, probably no but it's closer with him than anyone else. Seems like he should be above Kersey.
we need a ring of honor of sorts, but he's one of the best and longest tenured player in franchise history. even if we dont retire the #, we can honor him in some way.
CJ: - 9th in games played - 10th in minutes played - 4th in field goals - 2nd in 3pt field goals - 8th in assists - 5th in points - 10th in 3pt% - 8th in points per game - 9th in offensive win shares - 8th in offensive plus/minus https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/POR/leaders_career.html When i think of #3, i will think of CJ more than I will Damon. Prolly more than Uncle Cliffy (but he was before my time).
What the fuck No And it’s kind of pathetic it’s even a question Shouldn’t even be close my thoughts on retiring numbers - save it for first ballot hall of famers
I think the Blazers have gone so overboard in retiring numbers they need to un-retire some numbers first. I mean, Dave Twardzk? Lloyd Neal? Larry Steele?
It is interesting. I am between retire his number and erase this "era" from history. Great guy, exceptional player. At the same time selfish ball hog playing for his glory. I feel the same way with Stotts. And I feel the same way about last ten years: Great times and what a waste of time.
I’ve said it before - just have a ring of honor and fans can be reminded of favorite Blazers while buying a beer in the concourse.
Disagree. How many nba finals did CJ play in? How many All Star games? Jerome probably shouldn't be up there either. But I'd put him up over CJ. And I have no problem with CJ. I've always enjoyed him.
CJ is a great guy but we didn't win a conference championship with him as our second best player, he hasn't made a single all star team, he's actually a much better personality/human than he is a player. There really is no reason to retire his number, none at all. I do wish we had a ring of honor though to honor guys like CJ after he's retired, Cliffy and Kersey, Sheed and others but that's where CJ belongs not with a retired number. It's kind of pathetic that we're even thinking about it. Twardzik, Hollins, Steele, Gross and Neal were all huge contributors to our only championship and while it's pretty sad that we have to value that one title so much it makes sense. CJ just hasn't contributed to anything memorable besides moments that we've enjoyed with recency bias and the character that he always brought.
Only guys who should have their jerseys retired: Walton Lucas Drexler Porter Kersey Lillard That's Portland Trailblazers basketball right there.
