Interesting part of this shortage and this vote is that the very reason for it was republican and Trump policies. Biden had to invoke the defense act to fix it.

The reason for the baby formula shortage is the shutdown of the Abbott plant and ongoing supply chain issues. It has nothing to do with republican or democrat policies.

They only care about babies in the womb. Once they are out, they can starve.

192 Republican members of the house voted against feeding babies, after all this outcry over abortions, just to spite Democrats.

Except Trump's new trade deal with Canada prevented us from importing Canadian formula...

^^ Neither of those is the reason for the shortage.

Yes, being unable to replace current stock is a reason for the shortage. Canada has surplus they are willing and ready to sell, but we can't buy it due to the trade agreement... And that agreement was made by Trump.

Regardless of the cause, Republicans don't seem to care about fixing it.

And yes, voting not to spend money on more food is a reason for a continued shortage.

If you run out of food at your house and you choose not to go to the store and buy more, you are causing the continued shortage.

    That's what Republicans just did.

I think he is arguing that the actual shortage was caused by the fuck up at the Abbot plant. The inability to buy Canada's surplus formula is stopping the shortage from being fixed, thus continuing the shortage, but is not the actual cause of it.

Yes. Which is pointless semantics and almost dishonest deflection.

People are upset that a problem has not been addressed in a timely fashion, and are complaining about the policies making that problem worse.

Playing semantics to blame a single manufacturing company just makes one look illogically biased.

First of all, why are we relying on a single facility for so much formula? Probably because Republicans keep approving mergers and other anticompetitive practices.

Second, Republican policies hamstrung us from addressing the problem even though Canada has stock which could help immediately.

Third, 192 Republicans said no to emergency funds which would have helped resolve the shortage sooner.

Yet here we are. Doesn’t matter. So what can they do about it? Seems they voted against one solution inexplicably

It isn't deflection, it's a fucking fact! Yes, we have limited the suppliers of baby formula to a limited number of manufacturers in the U.S., and yes that is due to tariffs enacted during the Trump administration. However, that is not why there is a shortage. We were doing fine before the Abbott plant closed down. One can argue we took on too much risk by enacting the tariffs, but I also understand why we did that. It was to protect domestic production from Chinese competition. I think they may need to adjust how they source the supply of formula and it appears they are working on that currently.

So then we agree. The shortage is at least partially caused by limited supply options due to republican policies. Yes, changes to those policies need to be made, and yes 192 republicans voted against emergency funds to get formula to babies in need.

My apologies, I thought you were arguing against those claims.

They will forget. And when the emergency money helps, Republicans will still tout the aid.
