Lafreniere had 31 points in his second year. Hardly "done it".

Baffling that it's controversial that we should be giving the #1 pick in the draft first-line minutes.

Bringing back all 3 of Copp, Vatrano and Motte will be tough, unless you get rid of Chytils salary. Nemeth can be dealt off somewhere with a 3rd round pick or prospect. I wouldn't rule out Kravtsov on the team next year, though it's more likely he's dealt.

In year two he had 31 points, 19 goals, and has the most even strength goals on the team over his two years. In addition you can see with your eyes the player Lafreniere is becoming. So yeah he has done it in spite of not getting PP1 time of 17 mpg. It is about the player and the coach, not just a coach. And done it is improve his game. That was the statement, so yes 100% he has done it - improve his game no doubt.

And winning matters also for players growth. The Hughes stuff is funny. The Devs are a laughingstock, but hey he gets PP1 time and 17 MPG. There is more than one way to grow and teach kids. That is the point here.

Yes - Lafreniere has absolutely improved his game. More than one way to grow/teach a kid.

Yep if Kakko only would play more on the power play he would have scored a gimmie last night. Again, other top picks go to teams with shitty talent. Perhaps if Kakko didnt miss almost half the season he would have been given more time. Problem with Laf is there was a guy name Kreider who put up a career year in goals and another guy named Breadman who put up 96 points..so yeah..i think the coach was right to keep those two as his first and second left winger. They tried moving the kid to right wing to give him ice time on the top two lines...which Kakko was given...it didnt work out. This he has to have power play time develops them is such bullshit. Easing kids into a lineup making them play two way hockey will make them better all around players.

you know what would make them even better...having a solid reliable center between them. Can Chytil be that guy...perhaps..wouldnt that be a good thing all three developing together.

All the power play points hughes put up did wonders for the Devils, their power play ranked 28th at 15.6%

One blueprint to growing kids - MUST play on PP1 MUST play 17 mpg +. That is it. Anything else does not work and you are f'ing them over...lol.

Playing on a winning team and getting playoff experience...nope. Being held accountable to play a full ice 2 way game...nope.

Playing on PP1 for 17 mpg + on a shitty team with no hopes is all good as long as those thresholds are met.

For the record, I am not saying these kids shouldn't be given opportunities to be a big part of the team, and play important roles, they should. I am taking issue with the thinking that the only way to accomplish maximizing them big picture is play on PP1 and 17 mpg +.

Playing on a better team, with good players, and being asked to be accountable and earn ice time is good as well. Getting playoff experience and playing roles is good as well. More than one way...

Can we all agree you need a combination of what you just said above and leave it at that. They also need to figure out on their own as well. This is not a development league. It also depends on how bad they want it and how they adopt to living in the big city like New York.

Al, you're an epic moron who has no clue how to develop young players. It's pointless trying to educate you. If it was up to your dumbass Lafreniere and Kakko would still be in the minors. Also, the NHL is absolutely a developmental league when you take players in the top 5. You draft those players with the sole purpose of developing them at the NHL level to help you win cups. Only the Rangers are so fucking stupid that they don't do this. The Canes took Jarvis in the first round out of the top 10 and they are playing the kid a shitload. That's because they get it. The Rangers still don't. Torts didn't want to develop Kreider, the team turned on him and he got fired. However, now it's OK not to develop other young players on our roster. It's bullshit and it has been all season. The Rangers have gotten into a very bad habit which will lead to them never winning a cup if they don't change. They commit to developing young defenseman but not forwards. Why, I have no idea. It's retarded. Everybody can see it but some of our dumbass fan base who just want to go to games and hope some vets win a few playoff rounds.

Al, I hope you'll be okay buddy that you go back on ignore by the 2 year old...lol.

Step - This is not a development league.
The very next post by the vulgar one - Also, the NHL is absolutely a developmental league when you take players in the top 5.

Tells you all you need to know. The just draft and play for tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow guy. Seriously, you should go be a Buffalo or NJ fan - they are always building for tomorrow. You'd love it because the kids play. Never win, but you don't care you just want to develop kids for 2078.

Yup - all of the above. More than one way to do it. Many factors. Your closeminded vulgar buddy doesn't understand that.

Again, basing the rangers past on "developing players"...how many #1 picks and #2 picks have the rangers had to not develop..I'll wait....jarvis..a center averaged 13:52 minutes a game this year...playing a shit ton more than wingers Laf and Kakko...he had a total of 6 power play points..what a tremendous job "developing " him.

The last overall wingers taken #1 goes way back to 2012 with Edmonton taking yakupov..and in his rookie year what other rw did the oilers have...Jordan erberle..his average ice time...14:34 on a shitty Edmonton team.

Before that Tayor Hall...before that Patrick Kane both played an average of 18 minutes per game...common dominator..all went to shitty teamz..Kane was the only one who eventually won a Stanley Cup..

You are such wise all knowing hockey man I'm shocked your not in the game in some capacity.

These dudes are only 21 years old, they are fortunate to be on a playoff team so quickly based on where they were drafted. I'm sure neither are crying about not being on pp1 or getting top line billing. Most likely they're smart enough to know it's a great situation for learning and development from some high end vets while not being thrown into the fire too quickly. Lafreniere will be in the top 6 and likely pp1 next year, and hopefully KK can stay off the IL more and keep earning more time too.

You’re not grasping the point. Because of the salary cap the Rangers are going to lose at least two of their top line forwards which means the kids will be put in a tough spot next year where they have to carry the team being behind in their development. Also the veterans on this team have shown that they are not consistent in the playoffs and these kids are pretty much the only answer for us trying to win a cup. The Rangers completely fucked up this year with these two and it can’t be disputed.

Who are they losing off the top line? Z, Panarin and Kreider aren't going anywhere. Strome is a goner. If they can bring back Vatrano and/or Copp they will but Laf will still have a spot in the top 6 either way and be ready to go based on his solid development this year. Kakko is still a work in progress and hasn't show he deserves those minutes, regardless of who he's played with. He can play with Chytil(if he's still around) again next year which seems to be a good fit. The kids alone aren't going to make or break winning the SC, those $8m guys are going to have to be the main cogs.

Looking at the cap situation the next two years, it's not good. The organization continues to give these dumb fuck, NMC's which just kills your cap situation. I suppose if a team asks you to waive it and tells you they no longer want you it would be hard to decline that. I honestly don't know what they were thinking giving Zibanejad a NMC for his entire contract. Talk about fucking stupid. Whoever is running the Rangers cap situation is clueless. I'm actually starting to think that the Rangers didn't commit to developing Lafreniere and Kakko offensively because if they did they would be totally fucked with the cap. I bet they are hoping to give Kakko like a 3 year deal at like 2.7 and Lafreniere a 5 year deal at like 4 million. Unless those guys have agents that are imbeciles, I don't see that happening. I still believe Kakko will sign an enormous offer sheet in the off-season and they will lose him. Lafreniere looks like he's enjoying playing hockey here. Kakko doesn't. He never looks happy. I don't think he's been happy since he got here. I'm not entirely sure they won't deal Kakko in the off-season first before he could get an offer sheet from another team. Especially if his agent refused a contract extension. With Othmann, Cuyle and perhaps if that lazy fuck Kravtsov grew up, they are loaded with wings. Center is something they need to fix. I like Korczak. He was a faceoff monster this year in juniors but he's probably a couple years away.
