Now that the 2022 NBA Draft is complete, it's time to look at how the roster is shaping up for the 2022-23 season.

    upload_2022-6-24_10-23-50.png

The Blazers currently have the following players under contract:
    - D Lillard
    - J Hart
    - J Grant
    - T Watford
    - G Brown III
    - J Winslow
    - N Little
    - K Johnson
    - D Louzada
    - E Bledsoe (Team Option / $3.9M guaranteed)

    2022 First Round Draft Choice:
    - S Sharpe

    Free Agents:
    - A Simons (Restricted Bird)
    - J Nurkic (Bird)
    - J Ingles (Bird)
    - CJ Elleby (Restricted Bird)
    - E Hughes (Restricted Early Bird)

    2022 Second Round Draft Choice:
    - Jabari Walker

Essentially the Blazers have 10 players 'locked up'. 11 if they don't cut Bledsoe (deadline 7/10/22).

They can match any offer for Simons, so they can retain him if they choose. That makes 12.

Nurkic is a free agent, but the Blazers have his bird rights, so good chance he comes back. That makes 13.

How will the remaining spots be filled out? Will we sign any free agents of significance, or will we see a series of vet minimum signings to occupy the end of the bench?

After listening to the post draft interview with Joe Cronin, it's sounding like Jabari Walker may not be heading for a two-way contract, but rather on the active roster. Interesting...

I think Eubanks should stay. He’s a decent backup big

I wouldn't count Eric Bledsoe, there is no way he is on the roster after July 10th. So that's 12 guys.

    There are a few options

1 Star Trades - Make a run at Durant, etc
2 Acquire sign and trade player - ie Ayton, Bridges - this hard caps the Blazers
3 Acquire player under contract via trade - ie OG, Collins
4 Resign or explore offers for sending out sign and trade - Nurk & Simons
5 Salary matching needed - Use EBEC or Ingels
6 Full MLE or Tax MLE - ie TJ Warren, Mo Bamba - full MLE hard caps the Blazers

There are a LOT of unplayable players on this roster. Need some consolidation in a big way, more wing size, and an athletic big.

    Current Roster:
    - D Lillard - no discussion needed
    - J Hart - should be the main backup in the back court
    - J Grant - new starting PF
    - T Watford - backup PF?
    - G Brown III - not playable in competitive games
    - J Winslow - backup PF?
    - N Little - as of now, probably the starting SF
    - K Johnson - 3rd string SG
    - D Louzada - 5th string SG? No place for him this year
    - E Bledsoe - don't think he remains a Blazer

    2022 First Round Draft Choice:
    - S Sharpe - 4th string SG?

    Free Agents:
    - A Simons - starting SG
    - J Nurkic - starting C
    - J Ingles - backup SF?
    - CJ Elleby - please for the love of all that is holy, NO!
    - E Hughes - gone the way of the Dodo bird

    2022 Second Round Draft Choice:
    - Jabari Walker - backup PF/SF/2-way

So far, only 8 or 9 playable players, and some of those have big question marks.
Still a lot to be done in FA'cy.

I still think the Blazers are trying to acquire John Collins. Stay tuned.

Eubanks is an easy choice for a backup big. I like his attitude and he does his job. There will be injuries...need backups

Looking at the roster, I would love to pick up a C/PF combo player

    Current combo players:

Winslow (PF or SF- I prefer him at PF from an offensive standpoint. Defensively he can guard both)
    Hart- (SG or SF)
    Ant- (PG-SG)
Little- (SF-PF) I prefer him at SF but at 220 with a 7'2" wing span I think he can match up with most spread 4's
Grant- (PF-SF) We need him more as a PF

One position players (for the most part)

PG: Dame (Isn't Williams signed on a tw0-way contract)
C: Nurk (FA needed, plus Eubanks)
    SG: (Keon and Sharpe)
    PFs (Watford and Walker)

Not sure what to do with Didi and Brown. By fall camp they should know how much they have improved from year 1.

I think Ant will run the second unit, and they also have Keon and Williams developing. Keon flashed enough for me to believe he can play point. I think getting size/length is more important.

I'm no Salary Cap expert, but here's my swing:

    upload_2022-6-24_10-27-59.png

Estimating Nurk and Simons get signed for around $18M/yr each. Assuming Bledsoe gets cut before 7/10/22. Assuming Jabari Walker gets signed to a minimum full time roster spot.

If the Blazers use the full MLE, that puts them at $152M. About $30M over the Cap with 14 players signed.

With the remaining roster spot, they would have the BAE at $4M to use, along with the TPE of $6.5M from the Covington trade.

Not a lot of wiggle room there. I'm curious how Cronin is going to play this....

You are missing a 20M player they just traded for.

Even with these projects though. The tax is $147M. The apron is probably close to $153M. Even with Grant's 20M, we can still use the full MLE + a vet min to fill out the roster. But just barely under the apron.

I would put money on Bledsoe being traded. Didn't keep him this whole time just to cut him imo

The cap numbers are pretty depressing though. The team as currently constructed is up against the tax/apron and it's not even close to being a contender. Grant, Hart and Little will be up for raises the following year...

If they re-sign Ingles, they probably won't have access to the full MLE. This is such a careful tightrope....

It's going to be super interesting to see the exact numbers that Ant and Nurk sign for. It may dictate whether we use/which exceptions we have.

It will be cutting it close, depending on the Nurk/Ant deals. How do you figure we get below the tax if we use the MLE?

    upload_2022-6-24_10-24-31.png

I need to rewatch it but didn't Cronin say he needed to navigate this before using his exceptions? I hope there's not a mandate to stay below the tax this year. If so, I'm gonna picket outside of Moda for the sale of the team.
