Remember when we could have drafted John Collins and OG? In the same draft.... instead of trying to give up assets to trade for them now? Good times, indeed, FAMS!

If you look at the Warriors roster, they had 1 (ONE) player over 6'9".

Not saying this signing makes the Blazers the same as the Warriors, and not saying that it isn't a little confusing, but size isn't nearly as vital as people think.

One would assume this means that they're trading some of the extra players the team currently has (i.e., Johnson, Didi), and it only makes sense if he's considered the backup PG.

If they go with a 4 guard rotation (Dame, Simons, Hart, Payton) it's not bad. But putting Payton exclusively at any other position than the guard (cept in certain defensive assignments) feels counter productive.

Hart or Little can start. If Hart starts, Little is the backup SF (assuming he's not injured. hehehe :( ). If Little starts, Hart is the backup SF and SG.

POA Defender that the Blazers desperately need. It does create a log jam at guard though. There has to be another move coming. Cronin said Sharpe would get minutes. Right now, there are a lot of mouths to feed.

    Dame/Ant/GP2
    Ant/Hart/GP2/Sharpe/Johnson/Louzada
(they didn't sign GP to be 3rd string)

Louzada was never getting minutes and neither was Johnson, but still a massive log-jam.

Payton has never averaged more than 18 minutes, and his highest average came last season at 17.6

So let's not act like 30 year old Payton is all the sudden going to average a ton of minutes.

Having watched a handful of W's games last year, GPII is definitely that. He'd harass the hell out the ballhandler bringing it up but then often switch onto a wing or even Big. Very physical, usually using most of his fouls quickly. On offense he played the dunker spot and readily deferred to better shooters. He knows his strengths and limitations and has a high BBIQ

Imagine what Stotts would've been able to do to his game?

GP2 would be sitting in the corners shooting 3's all game long.

Trading Hart would be a FAIL. You don't take 1 step forward, only to take 2 back. Hart is a junkyard dog. And the kind of glue guy we need.

Sure, assuming he would've wanted to sign with Portland.

That's fine, but where are those 15-17 minutes coming from at this point? Is that not a valid question? If they are going to get Sharpe minutes as Cronin said, and Dame/Ant/Hart are already taking up a majority of the guard minutes, where do those 15 minutes come from?.

Good post. Yeah I agree many posters here are way too obsessed with height of players. Its not the 1990's anymore, the game is totally different. Especially at end of games and in the playoffs, teams go small successfully.

At 25M per year?!? No. Ant has to start and play starter minutes. You are right to characterize him as a PG but they have to make this shit work. Dame 42.5M, Ant 25M, Hart 13M, Payton 9M+... that's just under 100M for four back court players. There has to be a trade. Someone must want Hart really badly and they or someone else probably want Nurk too which is what's taking so long with Nurk. There will be a trade, there just has to be.

For the record I really like GP2 at 3/28. I think he's the type of player that we need. Look at his three point shooting last year... this dude does everything you need. Just having Dame, Ant, Hart, GP2, Shaedon, Nas, Justise, Keon and Didi on the same roster doesn't make sense especially (far too little height) when you put that together with Nurk still being unsigned. Something is up. I will be shocked if there isn't a trade and we just re-sign Nurk and sign a backup for him. I guess it's possible though... but really if there wasn't something in the works Nurk would be signed and there are free agent targets at 9M+ that make more sense than GP2 as far as roster construction is concerned.

I guess what could make more sense to me and I'm not arguing with you @illmatic99 we're both just trying to make sense of a currently puzzling situation but

    Dame/GP2
    Ant/Shaedon
    Hart/Nas
    Grant/Winslow
Nurk/ vet min or BAE backup C

Again, I just can't see bringing what spotrac has as Ant's 22.3M salary next season, off the bench. If you think that the Dame/Ant combo isn't right to start, I don't think you pay Ant that much money. Also if you see Hart and GP2 both as guards I don't think you make some of these deals without other deals involved. We're talking 9 guys 6'6" and under (Dame, Ant, Josh, Gary, Shaedon, Nas, Justise, Keon and Didi) making $126,376,621 next season (per spotrac). That's three million over the cap and 9 roster spots on guys 6'6" and under. Grant isn't that big at 6'8". The roster construction just doesn't make sense but it didn't going into last season either, so I guess it's possible we sign Nurk and a backup C and call it good.

Right now with the reported deals and if we cut Bledsoe but still have the 3.9M guarantee on the books and still without Nurk, we're at 12 players and a little more than 136M in salary that's less than 21M away from the hard cap.

Yep. That's a good deal... that said, I would assume that we would have had to really to beat the offer to get him here. It may have looked very similar to GPII deal anyway. Of course, you may prefer Brown to Payton regardless.

Cut down Dames minutes to 30, and Simons at 30, that's 36 right there. 15 for GP at pg.

Hart will play some guard and sf too.

9 Mil per year for a backup PG does not make sense. It does give us flexibility for a trade. And even if we don't make a trade, we are still better off with GP2 as a backup PG than we have for w while ...from a defensive standpoint which a lot of us have been screaming for a while.

But if this prevents us from signing a big then it was a mistake. If it helps us then it was a good move. I like GP2 as our backup point guard. But we really need to add that combo PF/C player
