Still hearing rumblings that it’s Notre Dame + North Carolina (or Miami). Heard some stuff about a Georgia Tech too.

the ACC would have to dissolve first. ACC schools, other than Notre Dame, face somewhere in the vicinity of a 500M-600M penalty for leaving the ACC right now. Notre Dame only faces about a 120M penalty

the ACC conference contract requirements for leaving the league is by far the most punitive in the NCAA

I’m aware. From what I’ve heard the two biggest fish for the B10 are Notre Dame and North Carolina; they’re not as interested in Oregon or UW at the moment.

The caveat is that Notre Dame may be pushing for Stanford (or possibly GA Tech) behind the scenes.

Also, who knows what Phil Knight will do in order to secure Oregon’s spot. Could accept a lesser share at first. Could offer to pay ND’s buyout.

FOX is pushing this more than the Big-10 is pushing this and FOX knows that the average national viewing audience for Oregon games dwarfs the average viewing audiences for NC, GT, & Stanford combined. Oregon is a national brand (they have been building that brand for 2 decades for good reasons) that secures TV ratings and TV ratings is the engine that will fuel the size of numbers in the coming TV and streaming deals for the Big-10.

this doesn't mean the Ducks are in obviously, but there are legitimate reasons to believe the Ducks are 2nd on the add list behind Notre Dame

I really don’t know the stats but I’m not exactly sure how true that is. For football, sure, but I think UNC has an advantage in basketball. UNC has a pretty massive brand as well. Oregon’s is probably more “valuable” because football brings in more revenue but I think you’re underestimating UNC.

Additionally, there is the fact of the matter from Canzano (lol) article this morning. Each B1G member would make less money by adding Oregon/Washington since they combine for approx ~60 mill in added revenue, a far cry from the 143 mill needed to “break even”. If Oregon has such a big and powerful brand, it’s not necessarily represented in dollars and cents (compared to UCLA and USC, particularly due to tv markets).

Anyhow, I know someone within a B1G athletic department who gave me this info, but they could be wrong. It’s Notre Dame followed by Stanford (as previously mentioned, it seems like Notre Dame is trying to work some magic behind the scenes for Stanford) and then North Carolina.

Things change fast though and with Phil Knights willingness to spend you never know what will happen with Oregon.

PS - I’m an Oregon alum, so not devaluing the brand or saying it’s not a strong brand. Was just sharing what I’ve been told.

That is just football. This isn’t only about football. It’s about basketball too. Like I said, Oregon probably has a higher viewership but I think it’s not as massive a gap as your insisting.

Anyway, if it were up to me, I’d take Oregon. But I’m just passing on what I’ve been told.

I think Canzano might be completely full of shit

according to this, in 2020-21, Oregon ranked

31st in total operating expenses at 101M

16th in total operating revenues at 117.5M

12th in generated revenue at 117M

    https://www.sportico.com/business/c...finances-database-intercollegiate-1234646029/

(Oregon was better than NC in two of those categories. The one NC led they led by 600K)

then, there is the very real factor that Oregon's revenue reflects the 25M/year less that each Big-10 team already receives. So the comparison is apples to oranges. And it would be like Oregon would be arriving and leaching off of the other schools. They be generating their own revenue too and it's hard to believe that Rutgers or Northwestern or Purdue games would out-rate Oregon games

now...this is accounting and there can be all kinds of accounting skews in these numbers. It's certain that Oregon can't generate the revenue Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State can. It's also pretty certain that teams like Rutgers, Northewestern, Purdue may be net losers when it come to revenue generated and revenue taken. And Maybe Oregon would be like that. I don't know, but I doubt it

don't get me wrong, I've been saying that there are a lot of monkey-wrenches that can sink Oregon in this pursuit. I think they have a dcent shot at making it into the Big-10. But it may only be 50/50...that I don't know

This is why I ultimately took a step back from sports.

None of my teams are really likely to ever win a ring (in my lifetime.)

Usually I don’t agree with John and actively avoid his articles; but it wasn’t him saying it. It was the former Fox Sports President saying it and he said Oregon is worth about 30 mill per year.

But I also think Oregon will eventually end up in the B1G. I also think it’s possible the B1G is trying to persuade UNC in order for ACC to collapse sooner so they can grab GA Tech, one of the Virginia schools, Miami. Gotta think if ND/UNC are gone Clemson, Virginia schools, FSU are gonna be trying to cut bait ASAP.

And of course Oregon would outrate those teams. But those teams are already part of the B1G. Rutgers was lucky they joined when they did (and the B1G was desperate for the NY/NJ market at the time). If they were trying to join now I’m sure those teams would have a rough go at it.

I'm not really arguing against the points you are making and in fact, last night I had a phone conversation with an old UofO friend from my student days. He spent several years as a sizable donor and use to have good connections with the powers that be in the UofO AD. He also had connections to other schools administrations so he had the inside scoop on a lot of things. Not so much anymore as he retired from a big job in Portland to New Mexico and gave up his season tickets

he still hears a few things but they are 2nd or 3rd or 4th hand now. What he told me he heard, after saying he wasn't sure of the credibility, is that USC has pushed hard for Notre Dame and Stanford, trying to back-door exclude the Ducks because they are afraid of the Ducks recruiting power in Southern Cal. UCLA is saying nothing. And that Notre Dame is working on mafia offers to the ACC that the ACC would have to turn down allowing the Irish to escape some of the financial penalty for leaving. But he also heard that Fox Sports pushed back hard on USC's advocacy of Stanford because they want Oregon and it's much higher valuation instead. They don't care about Stanford's academic prowess

He hasn't heard much about how the various Big-10 administrations view all this although he is sure they would not mind adding the prestige of Stanford. The only substantive thing he heard is that Ohio State has gone to bat for Oregon, which makes sense because of Phil Knight's connections to tOSU. But they are one of only 14 voting members

he speculated that the ACC contract would be a real tough nut to crack for any school but Notre Dame. He think it all pivots on Notre Dame (duh), and that if the Irish do join, the most common sense move would be adding Oregon, Stanford and Washington. But it it just Notre Dame + 1 it was anybody's guess, including it being just Notre Dame for now
